Summary

‘I invite you to be courageous and get comfortable with being uncomfortable, because any discomfort you feel is temporary and pales in comparison to what black and brown people often have to experience on a daily basis. Are you ready? Let’s get started, we have work to do.’

The Good Ally is an urgent call to arms to become better allies against racism and provides a thoughtful approach, centering collective healing, to do so.

It is a book for those against persistent racial injustice, hungry to expand their knowledge and understanding of systemic racism in Britain and beyond. It uncovers the roots of racism and its birthplace, anti-Blackness.

It is for those who not only want to be able to better recognise both subtle and overt forms of racism in action, to examine their powerful role in it, but who want to know what to do about it. The answer often lies within.

The Good Ally is the answer to ‘what next?’

Critic reviews

"Nova Reid is one of the most generous, open-hearted, energising writers working today. The Good Ally is a beautiful, bold and no-BS guide to getting uncomfortable, digging deep and being fully human. It will be the best and hardest work you ever do. You will not regret it." (Emma Gannon)

“Powerful, exhilarating and confronting, this book stayed at the front of my thoughts, long after I'd finished it.” (Zoe Williams)

Eye-opening stuff thank you

At times uncomfortable for a white person to hear but very worthwhile persevering - eye-opening to understand what you have probably known all along but unconsciously decided to not acknowledge

Powerful and Real

This book is so powerful. It was a hard listen in parts but I feel inspired and I want to make a plan about how I will embed what I have learned into my life and practice. Thank you so much for speaking your truth and giving us permission to be unapologetically ourselves ❤

Forget everything you thought you knew

This book changed my entire mindset and understanding of racism and helped me to begin to address my own racism. It is without understatement the most impactful book I have ever read. Thank you for what you do.

Truth to Power

Nova sums it up, warts and all in this amazing book, that will speak to your soul and ignite a real hunger for change in you. If you are serious about becoming anti-racist and more, this is definitely the book for you!

Required reading for all white people

Doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out or if you’re years into your anti racist journey, this book is for you. Equal parts powerful and prescriptive, Nova gives you the history, the context, the knowledge, and the tools to do and be better. Be courageous, it’s contagious

This should be on the curriculum

Nova’s compassion for her target audience is what touched me the most. Her ability to have this compassion with all that she has endured at the hands of some of the white people she addresses is testament to her character and her belief in the greater good of her work. Me and my racism have learned so much from this wonderful book. And I have this excellent, heartfelt and dynamic resource to help me raise my kids as anti-racist as well as working on unlearning my own. Thank you Nova.

An important book

This book is an absolute must read for anyone wanting to understand racism and more importantly, how to be an anti-racist ally. Really practical advice as well as thought provoking, explanation of how white people can support the anti-racist movement. Nova is a very good narrator and author. Please make this your go-to guide and recommend it to your friends/family/colleagues.

Such a good delivery of such a big subject.

Truly well paced and considered. The navigation of racism and how we can all approach tackling it and it’s legacy is so well delivered.
Thought provoking and inspiring.
Some really heavy stuff in here, but it’s a heavy subject so clarity and honesty is welcome even if it’s hard to hear.
The narration is fantastic and feels fundamentally genuine, which really helped to engage me in a similar way to a rich conversation.

Please read this

I love this one, The audiobook is perfect and I ended up also buying the physical copy to so I could annotate and sit with the thoughts a little better. I've since lent that physical copy to a few friends who found it as helpful as I did. Nova does an amazing job narrating this audiobook and offers helpful guidance, and a just a little handholding at times, while holding you brutally accountable when needed. It's perfect for learning how to do better, be less performative and understand, how, even if you mean well, you might be causing harm. Please try this, don't make a fuss about it, and then recommend it to a friend.
