Summary

This is the extraordinary story of John Carter, who returns to the Red Planet in search of his beloved, Dejah Thoris. John lands in the Valley Dor, which is populated by vicious plant men, and discovers the Lost Sea of Korus, guarded by the great white apes and horrifying lions of Barsoom. It is here that he finds the princess Thuvia, who is a captive of the Holy Therns, high priests who eat only human flesh slain by their plant men. But this is only the beginning of John Carter’s adventures under the double moons of Mars before he fights his way back to his own people as the Prince of the House of Tardos Mors.

Over 100 years later

Still an amazing book a century after its release. The movie was one of my favourite films before I read the first book a few years back. Never watched the film since. The second in the series is just as good and gripping.

great fun.

A fabulous bit of pulp fun where each chapter ends on a cliffhanger wonderfully read by William Dufries. Fair skips from one action scene to another so that sometimes its hard to keep up but it's never less than entertaining. At times the source material being read is so over the top that Dufries must have been virtually choking trying to maintain a straight face reading this fantastical tale out loud. That said however his reading injects humour and never cuts the ham too thickly allowing the listener to be engaged fully in the story. Burroughs writing style has obviously dated but that just made me enjoy the story all the more. This won't be to everyones taste but fans of fantasy fiction that don't take things too seriously should have a ball.
