About this listen

The smallest items can hold centuries of secrets.

Inara Erickson is exploring her deceased aunt's island estate when she finds an elaborately stitched piece of fabric hidden in the house. As she peels back layer upon layer of the secrets it holds, Inara's life becomes interwoven with that of Mei Lein, a young Chinese girl mysteriously driven from her home a century before. Through the stories Mei Lein tells in silk, Inara uncovers a tragic truth that will shake her family to its core - and force her to make an impossible choice.

Inspired by true events, Kelli Estes' brilliant and atmospheric debut serves as a poignant tale of two women determined to do the right thing and the power of our own stories.

Incredible and inspirational

A truly beautiful story one which will remain in my thoughts for a very long time. A story which teaches us so much in every aspect of life.

Fantastic story

Loved the telling of the story in two eras, which fleshed out the details unfolding in the present day. Moving, emotive and sensitively written, it kept me gripped throughout. Bit slushy in places but that didn’t detract from the brilliant story. Just excellent

Really enjoyable historical fiction

This was a lovely listen, the narrator was perfect for the story.
It brought to life a terrible part of history that I hadn’t heard about before. I enjoyed the crossover over from present day to the past and I looked forward to going to bed every evening so I could listen to more.

A gripping story well told

Great narration and a beautiful story. I appreciated the historical context and the unknown facts of the Exclusion Act which negatively impacted the Chinese community at the time in which most of the story was set.
A little too Mills & Boon in places in its dialogue, but nonetheless beautiful story telling.
Highly recommended.

Excellent history lesson

I didn't know about the exclusion act and was shocked to find out about this unsavoury historical truth. The story is extremely well written and although fictional it is one of the best I have heard in a long time.

The author explains how she took several historical stories to write this book but I regret that she chose a town that defended the Chinese as example of what happened elsewhere in the States.

An interesting story

Really enjoyed listening to this story. The vision of the silk and it's story was brought to life.

Good hiztorical novel

Enjoyed this a lot. It has good historical detail about events most of us know little about. A pity the good story was weakened by an unnecessary romance, but it didnt take up a lot of time nor spoil the main plot/s.

It was ok. No substance. I battled.

Hated the narrator. Struggled to finish and concentrate on the story. It was bland.

A story of two halves

I enjoyed the historical storyline a lot but not so much the present day. I found myself uninterested in the present day characters which I found to be somewhat predictable.
So overall, I enjoyed the historical and interracial storytelling.
The narrator did well, but I couldn't believe the Scottish / Irish accent at all.
Iitdid keep me entertained, but not rivetted
