Summary
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson—creator of the smash-hit science fiction and fantasy series Skyward, The Stormlight Archive, and Mistborn—comes a new science fiction adventure. Narrated by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading.
A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit. The few fragments he managed to save provide clues to his situation, but can he figure them out in time to survive?
Note from Brandon:
Sometimes an idea just won’t let go of you for years. The initial seed of this novel was the title that eventually turned into The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England. At first there was no story go to with that title, but I wrote it down and kept coming back to it, wondering what that book could possibly be about. Something else I thought about off and on for years was the classic concept of a man waking up in another time and another place, with no idea how he got there. It was when those two ideas came together, and I placed a book with that title into that man’s hands, that this novel was born. I hope you’ll have as much fun with it as I did!

Greatly entertaining and original
This book was both humorous and thought-provoking. I really enjoyed both the concept, the story and the characters. A great stand alone story.

This was my first Brandon Sanderson book, and it was amazing. It won’t be my last.

Great little story
I really enjoyed this story, totally different from other Brandon stories but a delightful read. I read the book in ebook first and then listened to the audio book because I’m a fan of Kramer and Reading. I’m hoping to see more books exploring this new setting and seeing how John develops his wizardry and helps this new world develop.

Great story, but...
Michael Kramer's narration was top notch as always, EXCEPT for his British accents, which were toe-curlingly awful. I guess they sound fine to an American ear, but to a British ear? Good grief. Thankfully the story was good enough to make me grit my teeth and bear it.

Poor story telling at it's best
Feels like an unedited first draft with a mixed bag of random ideas that smashed together into a mess that is hard to follow, unclear, unrelatable, don't care for the characters, lost interest in who is who, ended up listening to this at 2x speed just because it made it bearable. Felt like a child writing a story. Waste of time. Sorry.

What a small and boring story
The setting was a great idea. It looks like an "Off to be the Wizard" by Scott Meyer inspired book. Except it isn't and the great idea is ignored and not at all explored.
This is the book of a man who was a loser in life, finding himself over the course of a few days in a horrifyingly inaccurate and simplistic version of Anglo-Saxon England.
At no point does he try to "survive" nor are there any funny "Wizard" antics. It follows the main character over a few days, as he and the first couple of people he met fight real world gangsters.
They only ever interact with a few people. At no point are they challenged by having moved to a different era and at no point is the implications of the multiverse opening technology explored.
This book should have remained unpublished.
Edit: I forgot to mention, magic is actually real in this multiverse (Unless there's a twist at the end, I'm mostly finished with the book due to a trans-atlantic flight making me desperate for anything to read but now that I'm back dirt-side I just can't muster up the interest for the last couple of hours)
