About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Friend by Dorothy Koomson, read by Jennifer Saayeng, Angela Griffin, Christina Cole, Shelley Conn, Susy Kane and Sam Dillon.

What secrets would you kill to keep?

After her husband's big promotion, Cece Solarin arrives in Brighton with their three children, ready to start afresh. But their new neighbourhood has a deadly secret.

Three weeks earlier, Yvonne, a very popular parent, was almost murdered in the grounds of the local school - the same school where Cece has unwittingly enrolled her children.

Already anxious about making friends when the parents seem so cliquey, Cece is now also worried about her children's safety. By chance she meets Maxie, Anaya and Hazel, three very different school mothers who make her feel welcome and reassure her about her new life.

That is until Cece discovers the police believe one of her new friends tried to kill Yvonne. Reluctant to spy on her friends but determined to discover the truth, Cece must uncover the potential murderer before they strike again....

From the best-selling author of That Girl from Nowhere and When I Was Invisible comes a thrilling new novel that will have you questioning the line between right and wrong.

gripping

At first the book was confusing as it's different characters for different chapters but once I got into it, it was really gripping!!!

You’ll never guess who!!!

4 friends. 4 different stories. All intrinsically interwoven.

Fantastic story. Could wait to hear what happens next. A fantastic listen and so well read! You can picture each character in your mind. LOVED IT.

Definitely 5*****

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed 'The Friend'. Dorothy Koomson has crafted her story and her characters very well. Often, when you get about three parts into a book, you're wanting it to finish now and get to the end, but 'The Friend' kept my interest irrespective of what the ending was going to be and I was just enjoying the individual character's storylines.
Just one tiny negative is the story does leave a few loose ends which I rather had been tied up, otherwise an all round excellent read.
The narrators are excellent.

Slow burn but when the flame took hold a good read

I love this author and have read many of her books. sadly this book was a little confusing to start with. The different women, jumping from the past into the present.
However if you persist you will find it becomes easier to remember who is who.
I really started to enjoy listening to the different characters and trying to figuring out there secret. I am normally good at guessing who did it etc...but I was wrong with this one 🤦🏾‍♀️
I think this is definitely worth a read/listen I really did enjoy it.

Great book!

I loved all the characters. Cee-Cee, Maxie, Hazel and Aniyah all have their individual stories and issues. The latter 3 were all close friends with Yvonne, who got attacked and is in a coma. Cee-Cee is new to the community and for her own compelling reasons, she’s trying to find out who’s behind the vicious attack on Yvonne, who is a popular member of the school community. Or is she? Is there more to her than just the helpful mother of two, who is always ready to help others?
I really enjoyed this book and the performances were pretty good too although some of the voice artists didn’t distinguish between the voices of male and female characters, which made it sometimes a bit difficult to know who was talking… Having read some of the other reviews, some people seem to have either not listened to the book or left a review for the wrong book! None of the characters in this book (‘The Friend’ by Dorothy Koomson) are called ‘Elaine’ as one of the reviews stated…
