Summary

Low mood and depression are endemic, and on the increase, and the recession has further fuelled the need for the practical, down-to-earth advice provided in The Feel Good Factor.

Written and adapted for audio by leading nutrition expert and mental-health specialist Patrick Holford, it reveals highly effective methods to make a difference to how you feel - without the need for medical drugs. It includes lifestyle and life management techniques, as well as revealing the right foods to eat, and those to avoid, helping to improve your mood dramatically.

This accessible approach is supported by substantial research and backed up by poignant and motivating case histories. This includes those with major depression who failed to get better with conventional approaches and recovered completely on Holford’s regime.

Live and learn

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book is full of sound and sensible information. It is a shame that there is not an alternative health NHS we could subscribe to, which took a holistic look at the presenting problems we experience, where blood tests could be used to screen for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Our NHS appears to have evolved to wield a medical cosh approach to treating our ailments and this book gives pause for thought. It gives information about how to access help, however, this costs money, and lack of money is often the reason people eat unhealthily in the first place. It is a vicious circle.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The information about how our bodies convert food into energy and also how certain foods will cause problems was interesting and easily understood, however, I was not so keen on listening to the personal accounts, it was as if hearing the converted first hand would make the information more real, I found this a bit boring.

Which character – as performed by Patrick Holford – was your favourite?

Patrick Holford knows his subject and talks with enthusiasm and commitment, he believes in himself and I believed in him too.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book gave me hope that when the mindset is in the right place miracles can be achieved.

Any additional comments?

This book just made me wish that NHS doctors had more time to listen to problems and give sound advice as a first line of defence instead of being so ready to prescribe medications for life, when lifestyle changes and support could avoid this with proper encouragement.

Helpful and Encouraging

An interesting and informative account of what you can do to raise your mood naturally, without the use of drugs. It contained a lot of information that I already knew but increased my understanding of these things and informed me on much more besides! To sum it up I'd say it's a helpful and encouraging listen.

Quack

The author has made claims, amongst other things, that Vitamin C is an effective treatment for AIDS. What little wisdom this unqualified quack may have is more than swamped by poor science and his vested interests in selling you supplements.

I believe he has the absolute right to publish whatever he wants, but that it should not go uncriticised, so I'd urge listeners to check other sources to validate his claims before taking his advice seriously, and especially before paying for expensive supplements.
