About this listen

Winner of the British Book Awards, TV & Film Book of the Year, 2007.

A sharp, witty, and hugely entertaining debut novel which has just been made into a Hollywood feature film, The Devil Wears Prada is The Nanny Diaries set in the world of high fashion. Welcome to the dollhouse, baby!

When Andrea first sets foot in the plush Manhattan offices of Runway she knows nothing. She's never heard of the world's most fashionable magazine, or its feared and fawned-over editor, Miranda Priestly. But she's going to be Miranda's assistant, a job millions of girls would die for.

A year later, she knows altogether too much. She knows, for example, that it's a sacking offence to wear anything lower than a three-inch heel to work — but there's always a fresh pair of Manolos for you in the accessories cupboard. That Miranda believes Hermes scarves are disposable, and you must keep a life-time supply on hand at all times. That eight stone is fat. That you can charge cars, manicures, anything at all to the Runway account, but you must never, ever, leave your desk, or let Miranda's coffee get cold. And that at 3 a.m. on a Sunday, when your boyfriend's dumping you because you're always at work, and your best friend's just been arrested, if Miranda phones, you jump. Most of all, Andrea knows that Miranda is a monster who makes Cruella de Ville look like a fluffy bunny. But also that this is her big break, and it's going to be worth it in the end. Isn't it?

Like most I've seen the movie once, years ago when it was released, thought is was a delight ..
Year's later brought the book, read it on a vacation, loved it ..
Though nothing prepared me for just how outstanding, this audiobook is ..
The narration by Laurel Lefkow, an absolute joy ..

One of rare cases when movie is better than book.

It started so well however towards the middle I found myself getting bored with all the little fashion details. Nonetheless, a fun story.

Way overdue reading this book. Did not disappoint. Should be a must read for all young adults preparing to get out into the world.

Awesome read

I really enjoyed this book and thought it was a great read.It was very funny, I also really enjoyed Laurel Lefkow's narration.
This is a review from my 12 year old daughter, she couldn't stop listening to this even though she was meant to save it for holiday reading. I will get around to reading this...

*Choices*

**3.5 Stars**

This is about a feared and revered Runway magazine editor Miranda Priestly. She is a no nonsense, unreasonable, impatient and everything must be done in seconds kind of person.

Andrea goes for an interview as a junior assistant/lackey to Miranda and gets the job but is quickly learning that working for her is more than a full time job. It takes over her life and what spurs Andrea on is that this job could possibly be a stepping stone to her dream job of going into publishing and it is for only one year. As everyone says it’s a job that “anyone would die for”

Andrea starts to change and not in the best way, all her relationships are suffering such as her boyfriend, best friend and she never calls or sees her family, this is because she fears getting sacked. The job is all about image and even the heel heights are compulsory wearing anything lower than 3 inches you are out.

When her closet friend is in the hospital due to a serious accident while Andrea is working for Miranda in France her family expect her to quickly hop on a plane.
Andrea is thinking of work and her commitments is she doing the right thing? Can she keep up with Miranda’s intolerable behaviour or will she wake up and stand up for herself….

Laugh - I really did!

This book was really good. Funny, thought-provoking and occasionally tinged with a bitter-sweet wistfulness, I thought it was the best book I had read for a long time. I had not, and still have not, seen the film, but I doubt if Meryl Streep would be right in the role of the fashion editor (who, after all, was English). Anyone who has ever worked for a boss who was maybe slightly unreasonable, should read this!

mixed feelings

Although I enjoyed the story of the book and the narration (aside from the questionable English and French accents) I did find some of the writing problematic. for something that was written in 2003 there were some uncomfortable moments of racial/LGBT stereotyping. I still loved the story but it sometimes detracted from my enjoyment of the overall listen

Not bad though a bit depressing

It is difficult not to compare this to the film and perhaps rather unfair to do so, but perhaps inevitable. This is perhaps a good example of a second rate book making an excellent film. This is a virtue because no film can beat a first rate book. In the book Miranda is really an unrelievedly horrible executive and is both totally erratic and very dishonest. Although the fact that things don't work out elegantly (in contrast to a good film script) it really is almost impossible to see why almost none of her employees and co-workers loathe her. Also Andrea lives as an increasingly nervous wreck and I cannot see how she gains Miranda's approval near to the end. Of course the fashion detail in the book is excellent but much of its impact is lost because fashion is really a visual entity and here a picture is really worth a thousand words. I did however, enjoy the antics of some of the lesser employees.

Endlessly entertaining

I loved the book, which was read perfectly by Laura Lefkow. The characters were varied and 3 dimensional and I really enjoyed hearing the plot develop. The film was good, but this was so much better. Brilliant.
