Summary

A snowy Christmas gathering on an island off the Cornish coast goes murderously wrong in this festive golden age mystery.

December 1938, and storm clouds hover once again over Europe. Josephine Tey and Archie Penrose gather with friends for a Cornish Christmas, but two strange and brutal deaths on St Michael's Mount - and the unexpected arrival of a world-famous film star, in need of sanctuary - interrupt the festivities. Cut off by the sea and a relentless blizzard, the hunt for a murderer begins.

Pivoting on a real moment in history, the ninth novel in the Josephine Tey series draws on all the much-loved conventions of the golden age Christmas mystery, whilst giving them a thrilling contemporary twist.

Excellent, from beginning to end.

The best yet, in my opinion. Easy to follow, gripping and wonderfully narrated. I spent my childhood living in the vicinity of St Michael’s Mount and spent so many happy hours there, swimming in the beautifully warm, safe sea and exploring the numerous rock pools along each side of The Causeway. Accompanied by my family members and also relatives who were always keen to visit us during the long hot summers, in such beautiful surroundings. Happy memories relived once more.

Excellent as always

Nicola Upson never disappoints. This new story kept the tension going and was read beautifully by the narrator. Listened to it too much when I should have been sleeping!!!! Recommended.

Good story marred by narrator

I have enjoyed following this series mixing some factual material with engaging fiction. The present book has an interesting story but, like the previous book in the series, is marred by the narrator making several of the females into caricatures who speak in shrill voices that rise and fall unnaturally in pitch and be very irritating.

A gripping tale of love, loss and lies.

I saw this book in the shop on St. Michael’s Mount a few days ago and once I left regretted not looking at it so I was very pleased to find it on Audible. It’s a very absorbing tale full of human interest and emotions set in a very different time from our own but in such a timeless location it only helps to bring the vibrant characters to life, particularly if you are familiar with the Mount. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Another good one

Quite short, and that is no bad thing. The story is very well organised and we find all our favorite characters involved in a rather complex (as usual) plot. The setting on St Michael's Mount was very well described with an excellent sense of place and drama. All in all a very good addition to the series.

Enjoyable and enticing murder mystery

I really enjoyed this book. I was looking for a murder mystery story to listen to over Christmas and was desperately trying not to end up with something predictable and poorly written/narrated. The Dead of Winter took me a little while to get into but then proved the perfect choice. It is the right amount of unexpected and familiar, with a cleverly plaited together plot. The characters and environments are nicely realised and it’s an enjoyable level of nostalgia. The narration was also excellent. Thank you!

Great story and excellent narration

This series gets better and better, very atmospheric depiction of the traditional Christmas murder mystery. The narrator manages to give each character their own distinctive voice and identity and brings this book to life in a very immediate manner.

As always just brilliant!

Sometimes In a series, you worry that the Author will run out of ideas and that the books will become monotonous...well no fear here with Nicola Upson!
Filled with multiple murders and tender emotions, this book is a rollercoaster journey as always bought to life by the amazing narration on Sandra Duncan.
Bravo 👏

A great murder mystery

This is another great murder mystery from Nicola Upson and a must listen or read.
I love all the books in this series, they are all so well written and I love trying to figure out who the murderer is.
I also like that they have Josephine Tey as the main character, I have also read all of her books and would recommend them as well as this series of books.

The Dead of Winter

I loved this easy going book and the narration made it more enjoyable.
Having just visited St Michaels Mount, it was great listening to the descriptions of this incredible place.
Will now read the rest of the Josephine Tey series.
