About this listen

'A deeply satisfying read' Sunday Times

Christmas Day, and DCI Tom Reynolds receives an alarming call. A mass grave has been discovered on Oileán na Caillte, the island which housed the controversial psychiatric institution St. Christina's. The hospital has been closed for decades and onsite graves were tragically common. Reynolds thinks his adversarial boss is handing him a cold case to sideline him.

But then it transpires another body has been discovered amongst the dead - one of the doctors who went missing from the hospital in mysterious circumstances forty years ago. He appears to have been brutally murdered.

As events take a sudden turn, nothing can prepare Reynolds and his team for what they are about to discover once they arrive on the island . . .

Enjoyed this book as one of the series

Up to Jo Spain's good standard with the main characters. I found a couple of minor flaws in the plot, stretching credulity, but still enjoyed the story. The narrator is exceptional! She does not only make it clear if it is a man or woman speaking, but I can instantly recognise the different characters by tone and accent. Incredible narration throughout.

I enjoyed it, as I have with all the others. I've already bought book 5. and, as ever, the narrator was top drawer

Jo Spain obsessed!

Third Jo Spain book, love the narrator, love the Irish accent. Enjoyed the story a lot, got to know the characters from the last two books.
The twists & turns didn’t disappoint, safe to say I’m a fan.

Brilliant...again

Loving the Inspector Tom Reynolds thrillers and can't wait to start the next one. It's not a genre I thought I would like but the stories are excellent, easy to follow and the human element with Tom Rs team interwoven throughout.
The narrator is so wonderful to listen to, her lovely accent and skill at portraying the voices of the different characters.

Fantastic all round !

Two weeks ago I had never heard of Jo Spain, I then bought the first book in the Tom Reynolds series to listen to at the start of my holiday, I was so impressed by the the depth of the story, it’s many twists and turns and the characters that I quickly got through the other 3 novels culminating in The Darkest Place which came out yesterday and I have just finished. Jo Spain is a very talented story teller and with each novel her skill shines through in a way that only the top authors manage to do and her confidence grows as the series progresses. These books are full of complex plot lines which keep you guessing right the way through the novels and although quite dark in places Jo Spain deals with the issues with compassion and sensitivity. The characters relationships matures through all 4 books and there are plenty of lighter moments within the team of detectives. If you are looking for well written novels that are full of very realistic characters who soon become people you could really care about then the Tom Reynolds books are for you, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed by these books. I hope that Jo Spain will continue to bring us many more adventures with Tom Reynolds and his team, I really look forward to the day when I hear that she is about to publish her next novel, they really are brilliant in every way.
Aoife McMahon does a fantastic job of narrating these books and her lovely accent only adds to atmosphere of the novels, between them both they have created a winning combination from start to finish, long may it continue !!!!

Another Cracker from Author and Narrator!

Loving this series from Jo Spain, this was a great story with more twists and anticipation built in. The subplots of the characters themselves are also gathering pace and we're starting to get a real feel for Tom and his team.
Aoife McMahon is probably the best narrator I've come across, her tone and pace are perfect and she is excellent with the various accents of each character.
Really looking forward to the next book in this series
