About this listen
Published in 1844, it is often considered one of the great thrillers of all time and, along with The Three Musketeers, Dumas' most popular work.
Falsely accused of treason, the young sailor Edmund Dantes is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of the Chateau d'If. After staging a dramatic escape, he sets out to discover the treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies.
Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870) was a French writer, best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure, which have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world.

Enjoyable and timeless.
A good story of human faults and feelings. If not for the antiquated dialogue and regard of honour and propriety, it could easily be a modern tale of love and vengeance. The narrator has a great voice for audiobooks, but I can only assume the whole book was recorded without pause or editing - there are so many stumbles, mistakes, odd inflections and bizarre pronunciations!

This is the third time I have listened to this audiobook over the last few years. it is an absolute delight. Andrew Timothy's naration is completely engaging and I never tire of the story. Dumas at his absolute best.

Maybe we should start a club
Maybe we should start a club with badges and everything!! Those who have listened to the whole of this monster. I started off thinking the story was brilliant, but the reading a little "idiosyncratic". Then Edmond jumped off the cliff and we had to meet a completely new set of seemingly disconnected characters, which left me a little disorientated.
The reading continued to be a little odd, but I got used to the odd pauses, the coughing and the strange backgound noises. During (if memory serves)Chapter 25 or 26 an outburst of wind however was a little unnerving to say the least! However I was in for the whole adventure by that time, and I can say it was well worth it. By the end of the book I was completely hooke. Highly recommended

Absolutely beautiful!
What a lovely, deep and rich story. Even after so many hours of listening I am sad the book has ended. This version was lovingly read and reminded me of listening to a dear grandfather reading. I loved the beautiful use of the English language. The recording may appear a little dated to some, as the occassional mistake by the reader has been left in and the rustle of paper can be heard from time to time. For me, however, it only added to the charm of this fabulous classic.

I absolutely loved this.
I may have found this book too long and a bit tedious to read as there are long detailed descriptions to get through. However, listening was an absolute delight. Nearly every character has his/her own story and the complicated plot had everything to make this full of magic, romance, philosophy, emotion, daring-do and heroism. The presence of treasure, revenge, pathos, eastern mysticism , hashish, opium, poisonings and treachery all contributed to this delightful story.

What a discovery!
I bought this audio book slightly with trepidation, but it was absolutely wonderful! I loved every minute (and there's lots of minutes - being around 50 hours long!). I've been using audio books to urge myself to go on long walks, and this was a brilliant inspiration to walking further and further.
There's not a wasted word in the writing, and the delivery is rather like when my dad used to read to us kids on wet Sunday afternoons.
Trust me - it's a brilliant addition to life.

Excellent story and narrator
An atmospheric and moving story, with excellent characters, whom one gets to know very well, especially the eponymous hero. Though the plot meanders at times, it is engaging and clever, especially at the beginning and towards the end. The narrator has a wonderful voice and his occasional slips and errors I find charming and human; he tells the story with admirable subtly of tone and acting. I shall miss him and the characters and Dumas' story. Due to the length of the novel, it becomes quite a part of one's life!

Incroyable
As much as this is a very long book, you find yourself wanting more and more and not wanting it to end. I will certainly carry in my heart all of the characters good and bad for many years to come.
