About this listen

The Convent is the shocking true story of Marie Hargreaves, the girl who survived an evil nun’s care home from hell.

When a fancy car pulls up outside six-year-old Marie's home in 1959, her dad tells her she is going on holiday. But little does she know she will not see her home again for four long years. Her family cannot afford to keep her at home. Marie tells the story of how she was taken away from a poor but happy and loving home life to live in a convent - away from everyone and everything she holds dear. Her hair is bluntly chopped, her clothes are taken away and her name is changed. Then a horrific ritual of physical, sexual and mental abuse begins. Even after the convent closes, Marie is unable to share details of her suffering with anyone. But when a police investigation is launched, Marie realises that the time has come to tell the truth....

A tale that had to be told

What a brave little girl, I felt so very sorry for her that she could not confined in people because of what happened when she asked the nuns a question, the appalling things that the nuns got the other girls to do it beggar belief that nuns that were supposed to be godly should give these children so much pain. In fact it seemed that most nuns (& priests) hide behind their habits were perverts. I was surprised that when Marie did go home she didn't ask "Why Me" after all she helped her mum look after the children so I would have thought she was an asset not a hinderant.
Marie has great strengths and I am so glad she as after all what happened to her found inner peace.
I loved the narrator Dorothy Lawrence her voice was perfect.

Sad story

I got a bit fed up with the last part of the book. The time scale was very rushed and the conclusion not terribly interesting.

A hard read but compelling

One cannot say this is a wonderful read because it relates such a horrendous tale of physical and sexual abuse of a young very vulnerable child. That said, it is a compelling but sensitive read; creating a picture of survival against all odds. A narrative of the misuse of religious authority that has only recently been exposed. A must read.

Blimey

A very tough listen, but as worthwhile as it is appalling. All credit to the unflinching honesty and bravery of the author.

Incredibly emotional and brave account of her life

This book was very emotional for me to listen to. I couldn’t believe how cruel so called people of God could be.
Growing up in institutions myself and from a broken family this story mirrored many things that I had witnessed growing up.
It was well written and read, I would highly recommend it.

Marie strength

For many children in this decade this was the life they lived that followed them through to adulthood ,many showed resilience like Marie .
The loss of she suffered over the years but still found in her heart to forgive those who gone her wrong
Marie was a genuine carer from a young age and always put others first giving new beginnings which may have been her coping mechanism. She was community but never realised her ability to keep things together.
The church was part of her life but she turned negative to positive which shows the strength and resilience she had .
I enjoyed the narration the tone and accent fitted the scene I felt

Utterly heartbreaking

This story is absolutely heartbreaking. I just don't understand what made these nuns so evil. Marie should be so proud of herself.
