Summary

Dallas, November 2, 1963. Wayne Tedrow, Jr., has arrived to kill a man. The fee is $6,000. He finds himself instead in the middle of a cover-up following JFK’s assassination. There follows a hellish five-year ride through the sordid underbelly of public policy via Las Vegas, Howard Hughes, Vietnam, CIA dope dealing, Cuba, sleazy showbiz, racism and the Klan.

This is the 1960s under Ellroy’s blistering lens, the icons of the era mingled with cops, killers, hoods and provocateurs.

2 greats coming together

James Ellroy's writing is unique in its character and I just love it. The tale he tells in this trilogy is perhaps more fascinating to someone of my age who remembers the events covered and the personalities involved, however, anyone could be swept along with the pace and excitement of these books. For me though one person makes this audiobook a superb listen and that is the awesome Jeff Harding as narrator. He makes any book come alive for me and my wife and his ability to keep one interested through a very long book is sheer genius. We have listened to just about every Jeff Harding book on Audible that is over 10 hours long and eagerly await every new one. We have also tried to contact him to let him know just what pleasure he has brought us - but to no avail - so Jeff I hope you read reviews. I am now about to start on the third book in this trilogy and would recommend this series to everyone. It is gritty in places and perhaps a bit too graphic for some - but this is REAL. Full marks to author and narrator - thank you both.

Outstanding literature

A novel written in a structurally awkward and linguistically ugly way in order to reflect the hatred and tension the subject matter is imbued with. If you allow yourself to be transported, it works brilliantly. It's far from comfortable but worthwhile.

Wow

Fabulous follow up to Tabloid. Tough and hard hitting, this always hits the mark. A great book.

Amazing!

I had started reading this book 3 times but each time lost track of the people. The way Jeff defines the characters is incredible - I have now 'read' it all in a week. The style of the book and the way it is read make this something very special.

Just started on the third book in the trilogy!

A bit jarring at first but stick with it.

If you could sum up The Cold Six Thousand in three words, what would they be?

Fast, Complex & Dark.

What did you like best about this story?

Its a different narrative style to any I've ever experienced. Very fast paced. If you are not feeling it at first I urge you to stick with it. You soon get used to the style.

Which character – as performed by Jeff Harding – was your favourite?

They are all pretty good. The Kennedy voices were good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Pete B was struggling for his life on the boat after shooting down two men and suffering a heart attack while trying to evade two others.

Baroque and Epic Ellroy

Its Epic length with pace maintained makes this a fantastic book. I preferred the snappier plot of American Tabolid, but if you enjoyed AT you should enjoy this too.

Read them and then listen to them.

I devoured this book about 10 years ago along with the other two in the trilogy. When I signed up for Audible they were my first ports of call. Nobody writes like Ellroy in my opinion and to be able to hear the style and the characters was fantastic. I'm convinced Pete Bondurant is the inspiration for Reacher.

The best.

Jeff Harding makes Ellroy's so well-informed, sleazy stories come alive. His J.Edgar voice and accents are perfect, I prefer this audio version to the paperback... but all three stories are the best summation of this awful period ever. Ellroy rules over any JFK or Mafia author.

Pretentious and annoying

It’s a good story told in an extremely annoying and pretentious style. I wish I hadn’t started it as I felt compelled to finish it.
