About this listen

“A slick story that combines gumshoe noir and extreme horror.” (Kristopher Triana, author of Gone to See the River Man)

"Mendes' novels are darkly gleaming puzzle-boxes that, once solved, reveal their awesome horrors." (Joseph Sale, author of Dark Hilarity)

Chinatown, 1910.

A series of ritualistic murders are discovered six months after Max Elliot turned in his badge.

Victims of the media-dubbed “Chinatown Surgeon” are little more than piles of flayed skin. The bones of each body were stolen. This torturous method of execution had only been seen once before and that case remained unsolved.

Confident of a connection between the grisly crimes, police turn to the one man they believe can help.

With the allure of closure to his own personal tragedy, Max Elliot agrees to reinstatement for one last case. But the clues lead the unstable detective down a path he never could have imagined.

Follow Max as he penetrates a supernatural world of drugs, violence, and an ancient race of chemists whose hidden influence shaped human civilization.

What Reviewers are Saying

“This book is the perfect blend of noir with extreme horror and plenty of fantasy elements. I get some serious Graham Masterton vibes with Mendes’ writing, but in all honesty, you will never read another book like The City.” (Stephanie E. Jensen, author of The Howling of the Dead)

“Wow, it’s been a while since I have felt for a character as much as I did for Max Elliot.” (Paula Limbaugh, Horror Novel Reviews)

The City is a slick read, you’re never bored & the anticipation for the next visit to the ancient city is constantly high.” (Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life)

A must read! a perfect blend of noir and extreme horror!

I cannot believe I didn’t read this gem sooner! This book grabbed me as soon as I heard the narrator read the first few sentences. In that opening, I was immediately transported into another time period and in a far away world, with the smell of opium all around me and a fitting introduction to the protagonist Max Elliot. Amazing narration by Chuck Brugee!

The story just gets better and better with every chapter and the author manages to not only intrigue with a mystery to solve, but it creates a fantastic world building that it’s not difficult to believe it could have been real!

I love a broken main character, and Max Elliot fits the trope perfectly, with his ragged look and his lost soul, wallowing in his mistakes day after day, just trying to find a new purpose in life. What he does well is solving mysteries and trying to solve inexplicable murders is what gives him a second wind and another opportunity at life.
But it won’t be easy and he would have to battle not only his demons but real ones too, in The City, full of any depraved act you can think of and even those you can’t imagine. This is a blend of extreme horror and noir, with all the blood, violence and gore you can think of. All of this is vividly depicted, as are the characters’ feelings, making this book a cinematic experience. This would be perfect on screen!

I inhaled this book until the end, giving me such a reader’s high. I am now left with such a longing not just for the characters (Max above all) but for the atmosphere, background, the surprising world building and the mysteries.

I highly recommend this book for an unforgettable reading experience, but I also advise you to check for triggers.

Thanks to the author and Blood Bound Books for the opportunity to listen to it and this is my honest opinion.
