About this listen

Enthralling radio dramatisations of eight of Charles Dickens' much-loved novels.

Charles Dickens is one of the most renowned authors of all time, and this second digital volume of the dramatised canon of his work includes eight of his classic novels.

This collection includes the epic masterpiece David Copperfield, described by Dickens as his 'favourite child'; suspenseful mystery Bleak House; Dickens' most openly political novel, Hard Times; and Little Dorrit, a sweeping tale of imprisonment, poverty and riches. Also included are A Tale of Two Cities, set during the French Revolution; coming-of-age novel Great Expectations; sweeping satire of wealth and corruption Our Mutual Friend; and Dickens' final, unfinished story, The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

With a star cast including Robert Glenister, Robert Lindsay, Honeysuckle Weeks, Kenneth Cranham, Sir Ian McKellen, Alison Steadman, Geraldine McEwan, Andrew Scott and Ian Holm, these radio adaptations bring Dickens' imaginative world to colourful, captivating life.

Superb

All the adaptations are really superbly done, extremely enjoyable and a great access point for Dickens. The indexing ous non existent but dont let this put you off, the performances far outweigh any minor index niggles.

A Great, Traditional Listen

Drama, humour, tragedy and romance. Executed to a high standard by a great, classical cast.

It is such a great pity that there is no proper separation between the books.

The first book i enjoyed. The next book carries on as if it's the same story. There are no introductions this got a little confusing but I did enjoy listening to this collection

Classic Dickens.

Probably the best way to experience the novels of Charles Dickens.
I have always found Dickens difficult to read, some of his books are overly long and tedious in my opinion, so the dramatisations are much better for me personally.
Superb performances from all of the cast. I especially enjoyed David Copperfield, Little Dorrit, Great Expectations, and Our Mutual Friend. The others were alright and passed the time satisfactorily enough.

Excellent listening

I have a free A-Z address book on my kindle and have noted the chapter numbers so that when I want to listen to a particular book again, I know exactly where to go. A previous reviewer has completed this for me as I am only half way through.

Polish and flair

Consistently high production values, excellent editing, slick casting. Edwin Drood stood out particularly; menace, texture and suspense plus an swaggering, intense performance by Holm. Special mention also for a roistering turn by Alison Steadman in 'A tale of two cities' all that is good about the BBC is showcased herein.

NOW HAS CHAPTER HEADINGS0

Noticed that many of the reviews indicated that the collection had no chapter headings and so you could not tell which book you were reading or where you were up to - that seems to have been rectified - I have listened to these previously and they are a superb telling of Dickens work - they are available off and on for free on BBC IPlayer - but it is convenient to have them collected here for when you have a little time to relax with an old favourite.
