About this listen
Can a painting hold a secret safe in plain sight across seven centuries? The murder of the last member of an old Venetian family peels back the rug on a shocking truth that draws art historian and textile expert Phoebe McCabe into the fray.
What she sees in the missing Renaissance symbology will shake the foundations of religious and cultural assumptions across two continents and point the way to a priceless hoard. It’s a secret potent enough to pitch rival factions against Phoebe and her team while destroying history as collateral damage along the way.
By the time Phoebe tracks down the truth to its final destination, she’ll need to face her greatest enemy armed with nothing but wry wit, an indomitable spirit, and what’s left of a broken heart. But nothing will stop this warrior of the ancient lost and found.
From the dark, misty canals of Venice to the vivid souks of Marrakech, Phoebe and her friends are pitched against the desperate and the entitled. Who owns a treasure buried on foreign soil? Can the poor ever win against the rich? And, most importantly, can love conquer religious persecution and even time itself?
If you love twisty, action-packed mysteries driven by engaging characters set in vividly drawn locales rich in historical detail, then you’ll love this first book in the Ancient Lost and Found series, the first spin-off book of the Crime by Design Series.

Mixed feelings…
It took me 3 tries to get into the book enough to continue listening.
This was made harder by the narrator - they had one speed without let up which was a wee bit exhausting. They tried to do accents for Italians and Jamaicans which sounded like they were from China town. And mispronounced several words like “revelant” and a cornish pasty was pasty (like wall paper paste). But what I found the hardest thing to tolerate was the exaggerated “d” on the end of words that sounded like “der”. Wild becomes wilder, send becomes sender, and becomes ander etc. I ended up listening for them and was distracted from what was otherwise an interesting storyline. I will avoid any other books narrated by them for sure.
Maybe I shall give the author a try in a kindle version instead.

The Accents!!!!
I mean, if you can't do an accent, then just don't do it. I couldn't listen to some of it. It was like characture, almost bordering on offensive. Storyline, a bit like a Mills & Boon crossed with James Bond. I mean, I appreciate the work and research, but it just didn't hit the mark for me.

Quirky on a number of fronts
Enjoyed the overall plot and its various twist and turns. Enough to keep my interest, but not so many I - excuse the pun - lost the plot! I liked the main characters and became invested in their wellbeing. Like the previous review I agree the narration at times was somewhat "quirky" but I looked up the narrator and found she is German speaking which explains some of the pronunciation. Personally I rather liked it. It always made me smile whenever Peaches, the Amazonian Jamaican, spoke and sounded somewhat Chinese! Enjoyed it enough I am now listening to book 2. However I am already extremely disappointed with the narration and disappointed to find Peaches now sounds like an Australian - so still not Jamaican then! At least in this book the characters all sound different unlike book 2 where they all sound as if they've just graduated from Oxford - well except for Peaches of course!
