Summary

Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

England 1586. Alyce Bradley has few choices when her father decides it is time she marry, as many refuse to see her as other than the girl she once was - unruly, outspoken, and close to her grandmother, a woman suspected of witchcraft.

Thomas Granville, an ambitious privateer, inspires fierce loyalty in those close to him and hatred in those he has crossed. Beyond a large dowry, he is seeking a virtuous and dutiful wife. Neither he nor Alyce expect more from marriage than mutual courtesy and respect.

As the king of Spain launches his great armada and England braces for invasion, Alyce must confront closer dangers from both her own and Thomas' past, threats that could not only destroy her hopes of love and happiness but her life. And Thomas is powerless to help.

Takes you back to Elizabethan England

Really fabulous historical fiction…. I will look for more by this author after hearing this book.
Characters are all very believable and draw you into that time and place.

excellent story

very much enjoyed this story, well written and well narrated too. When I listen to stories like this, I am reminded how history repeats itself over and over again...today we also have "witch hunts" and just as in the old times, women were under severe suspicion and usually arrested just on the say-so of someone else who had their own spiteful agenda at play, today we have a similar situation with "hate crimes" and "hate non crimes", where a person may be arrested or at least questioned and harassed, just because someone supposedly took offence to their words! This book shows the worst and best of human nature, beautifully wrapped up in romance and history, and we ignore the fact that human nature does not change, at our peril.

The title was also most the most interesting thing….

It was ok….if I heard the smell of his skin, his grey eyes, wanting him to hold her I thought I would scream. These romantic phrases peppered the whole book and became tiresome and repetitive - I like the villain Isabel the best - at least she was truly awful!
