Summary
What would you do for the perfect life? Would you lie? Would you cheat? Would you kill?
Cecilia Wilborg has the perfect life. A handsome husband, two beautiful daughters and a luxurious house in the picture-postcard town of Sandefjord. But Cecilia also has a dark secret. A secret so damaging it can never be brought to light.
Then Tobias enters her life. He is a small, friendless eight-year-old boy who just wants to find a home. But he threatens to bring Cecilia's world crashing down.

Could not put down …
There was something so compelling about this book. I really invested in the characters whether I liked them or not. The story has so many layers and explores familial, friendship and romantic relationships, love, grief and betrayal, all integral to the plot. The use and description of landscape and season is almost worthy of Hardy! I won’t say more because of spoilers, but I loved it. I will definitely read more by this author.

Excellent and unusual book
This was my first Alex Dahl book and what a revelation it turned out to be. This is a stunning dark book that had me gripped for 12 hours. I loved the Swedish setting it was so atmospheric I felt transported there. I was intrigued by the main characters Cecilia was so dark and disturbed she was fascinating. This is a complex book told across different timelines that eventually merge and we get to put all the pieces together as Cecilia gradually unravels. The narration is very well done and brings the characters to life even the child Tobias. I would really recommend this book.

Gripping and suspenseful.
Really loved this book, a gripping story and although the majority of it was easy to figure out it did not take anything away from the enjoyment of the book. Cecilia however was a horrible character and very self-centred and manipulative. She was determined to have the life she wanted at any cost and did not really care about who she hurt. I am glad that the child in this got the home he deserved as he was the innocent in all this. Lies always come back to haunt you and that's something she should have thought of before spreading this web of lies and cunning behaviour. I have to say I can't feel sorry for her if anything in some ways I feel more sorry for Annie as circumstances forced her to be the way she was. I am glad that Cecilia got a bit of just deserts in the end although the ending of the book was very odd and open. It's not 100 percent clear what happened which I think is sort of fitting for this book given the web of lies that was created with it. A great book and an author who I am lightly to become a huge fan of.
