About this listen

In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price.

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she's a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha - one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles and make a powerful choice.

Cool story, but..

Performance for this was very disappointing. Narrators were good but sometimes when they would whisper it was extremely hard to hear and then suddenly they would talk normal voice or louder and it would make you toggle the volume all the time instead of enjoying the book.

The short summary of the book immediately caught my eye. I mean, for me it's hard to say no for witches & magic in general. Story and idea wise I would have given 4 star, but and it's a BIG but, how it's written (and with audio recorded) I'm only giving 3 star.

The story idea itself is so cool but the narrative and two story timelines makes it so difficult to focus on (at least for me). First few chapters I had to relisten because I would be so confused by the two narratives and frankly (in my opinion) it doesn't add that much to the story (now thinking back after finishing the book).

I still recommend the book, just don't have your hopes too high up :)

Good book, terrible performance.

Interesting book with a complicated story line to keep you captivated. The lady who does the audio is absolutely terrible though, she makes every character sound like there going to burst into tears with her whiney and shakey voice and when she reads the mens parts she sounds like a talking dog. Honestly I could go the rest of my life without hearing her voice again and die happy.

Not the Best Ending!

Loved this book up to the last chapter.... then it ended too quickly with lots unexplained. Such a shame!

Started slow, eventually started to enjoy it.

Really struggled with the first half of this and almost gave up several times, but got better as it went on. There was a lot of infodumping and confusion, but the world was interesting and I eventually enjoyed the story.
didn't enjoy the "bard" narrator but enjoyed the narrator who did Tea's parts.

Great story of witches

A new twist to a story of witches. It seems slightly Asian oriented with names of places but it does not bother me at all. The narrator is great does decent on the difference between male and female voices. Her only downside is that when she whispers I feel that half of the sentence falls away or that I cant hear it.

Early origin and training story of a bone witch.

The story focuses on the origin, discovery and early training of a dark ASHA or bone witch, Tea. If you love getting into details of a new magical world, where the system is explained in detail through the book, down to the meanings and uses of herbs, clothing, colours etc. this is the book for you. it's basically most of the book and I did not get bored.

Honestly, I enjoyed it more than I did the first book from the Grisha series- Shadow and Bone (I like the Grisha series and love 6 of crows duology. I know there are die hard grishaverse fans out there, please be gentle
:) ). The Bone witch built it's world and took it's time -yes it took a whole book - but I loved it!

It's told in two time frames. The present Tea relating her history and experience of becoming an asha and her introduction into this unknown world, while very slowly unveiling her present motives and plans which lead us onto book 2 (I hope!). I'm very excited to listen to the next one.

I also like the fact the dark and light isn't good and bad, black and white. there is some complexity which I hope evolves in the books to follow.

The narrator did a wonderful job bringing this book to life! I thought it was a pretty original story and look forward to more from Rin Chupeco.
