Summary

Dylan was six when The End came, back in 2018; when the electricity went off for good, and the 'normal' twenty-first century world he knew disappeared. Now he's 14 and he and his mam have survived in their isolated hilltop house above the village of Nebo in north-west Wales. Despite their close relationship, each has their own secrets, thoughts and memories, when emerge as, in turn, they write in a found notebook - the Blue Book of Nebo.

An incredible journey . Beautiful story telling. Honest, raw and authentic.

simply stunning. it's stayed with me. I didn't want The End to end. loved it. The relationship between mother and son is painfully beautiful.

What a beautiful story (of what could have been)

This book came up in a Facebook forum or rather the abridged Radio 4 version did. Within a few minutes I was debating whether to buy the actual audio book (even though it was only 3½ hours long) and I'm glad I did. Not at all in my usual being of listening but the melancholy, biographical story that had more than a hint of what could have been if Covid was as bad as initially thought or, of course any future global outage and pandemic. Beautifully read with a melancholy that suited the subject. Given my normal genre is normally medieval history or adventure, Scifi with the odd biography this was a real eye opener.
Diolch yn fawr iawn.

Amazing and beautifully written

I cannot praise this author enough.
How the author wove the story around the welsh language and beauty of the landscape.

A well deserved plaudit for this Author. I look forward to her next book.

Simple raw beautiful storytelling

Simple beautiful disturbing relationship of mother and son in dystopian apocalyptic North Wales. Diolch yn fawr great read.

Exceptionally beautiful narration

Deftly written and powerfully beautiful. So much said and unsaid. I loved it and wasn't ready to say goodbye to these characters though I was happy to have joined them in this moment.

A beautiful story of surviving an apocalypse

How can a story about such a grim subject be so beautiful. I had heard the abridged version on radio, but I'm so glad I opted to listen to the full book.
People sometimes scoff at my use of audio books over paperbacks, but this is a prime example of why... it was read so beautifully by the author, bringing it to life with her wonderful voice in a way I never could have.

A gorgeous story

This is my first book by this author, and what a find! I absolutely loved it. It felt a lot like what I imagined could have been when covid hit, had virtually no one survived - the sort of reality I imagined when I wondered how bad things MIGHT get, filled with the beauty of returning nature, and finding ourselves, combined with horror and trauma. But don’t worry- there is very little to scare you away from this book, though it can be raw and painful in places. I should note, as it’s a YA book, that I’m far past being a young adult. And I enjoyed it very much. I loved that the author read it herself. She clearly intimately felt the story and the characters, and brought them to life amazingly. Her gorgeous Welsh accent and Welsh words flowed like a river of poetry over places, and really brought out the beauty and Welshness of the story. Just gorgeous.

A Literary Welsh Post-Apocolyptic Gem

A small and perfectly formed literary novel of resilience and discovery firmly set in the language and landscape up above Nebo, near Bangor, in Wales…after The End.
Taut with unanswered questions, both the personal and regarding The End, the story moves along through the every day of subsistence living while the characters feel their way through the gloom of time-before baggage and post-end confusion by writing in turns in the book of the title name.
Really enjoyed this, great writing and a great story, would have been a page turner if I wasn’t listening to the audible version. More from Manon Steffan Ros please!

Mesmerising and beautifully read

I live on Anglesey so this story is extra vivid - I was often fearful, as a young person, of an accident at Wylfa, Manon has created two extraordinarily ’alive’ narrators, and the story itself is compelling, with life after The End imagined in sharply-focused detail. No wonder this book has won prizes! Bravo to the author. Llongyfarchiadau, Manon!

Brilliant

Wonderfully horrifying tale held together with warmth and fear. BBC radio 4 are doing their own edited version which is how I learned about this book.
Bit of an abrupt end but that’s probably because I wanted to know what happens next. Surely this hideous life we’ve created couldn’t return so quickly. God save us all
