Dear Reader, the man I love is trying to kill me...
It's 1932 and adventuress and plant-hunter Emily Blackwood accepts a commission from Heinrich Vogel, a former dealer of exotic animals in Manhattan, living now with his macabre collection in a remote Scottish castle.
Emily is tasked to find a long-lost treasure which Heinrich believes has been hidden within the castle walls. But instead she discovers the pages of a diary, written by Hester Vogel, who died after falling from the Brooklyn Bridge.
Hester's diary leads Emily to an old book The Birdcage Library and into a treasure hunt of another kind, one that will take her down a dangerous path for clues, and force her to confront her own darkest secret...
Discover a mystery within a mystery in The Birdcage Library, a novel that will hold you in its spell until the final minute.

A little slow to begin but glad I kept going
Almost stopped about 20% in, because it felt a little slow, downloaded because really enjoyed the performance of Samara MacLarens in other audio books, I love the way she makes each character feel different and unique.
Enjoyed the second half of the book a lot more, felt like it really picked up pace and as someone who loves a puzzle it was really satisfying. I think it’s one I’ll be thinking about for a long time

Absolutely riveting.
You cannot stop listening to this incredible book by Freya Berry. I have listened many times to The Dictator’s Wife and whilst this book is very different in subject it has all of the same twists and turns. It is incredibly well researched and you are transported into the story. I cannot recommend either enough and am waiting with bated breath to the wonderful day Berry’s next work is published.
The narrator is wonderful to listen to. She embodies the book rather than simply reading it. I’m going to seek out more books that she has narrated simply for her that is made to tell stories and be listened to.
