Margaret, The Beaufort Woan.

Having listened to the story of The Beaufort Bride, I was ready to settle down to hear more of Margaret's story in the second book in the Trilogy, The Beaufort Woman The power over the country is held by winners in battle, there is plotting, and the main story line is the concern of a mother for her child, for whom she has grand plans. The many descriptive passages are narrated in such unhurried detail, the listener can bring the scenes to life. In 1640 we see Margaret, still a young woman aged 18yrs. is already a widow with one son, Henry, and once again remarried. Young Henry, Margaret's only child will come to occupy her thoughts throughout her life, she is constantly concerned for his safety, as the royal houses of York and Lancaster plot for power, it is for that reason she and Henry are forced to live apart during much of his life. Margaret is helped by loyal friends, her life is far from simple, she worries and intelligently plans for the future, widowed again she marries Thomas. The events which take place over the following twenty five years make for a great adventure, I recommend the book to the listener.

Loved it

This is the second in the trilogy about the life of Margaret Beaufort. It continues where the first one left off. Margaret is now married to Harry, whom she has grown to love and with whom she leads a happy and contented life. The fly in this ointment of contentment, is that Henry, her beloved son, remains very much out of her reach. War, however, was never far away during the troubled times of the Wars of the Roses, as the houses of York and Lancaster vied for power. Kings came and went, thrones were usurped, men died, households were broken up, leaving women to pick up the pieces of shattered lives and move on. A new husband, a ‘usurper’ king, intrigue and yet another war, followed by a new king Margaret can truly love and honour. This book, like the first in the trilogy, is very well researched. The author takes the details of ordinary life, clothing, domesticity, and weaves them successfully into wars, intrigues, coronations and other historical events without the material becoming ‘stiff’ and ‘starchy’. The thoughts and feelings of Margaret have then been seamlessly and skilfully embroidered onto this fabric. Margaret’s ‘voice’ is brought to life by both the author, Judith Arnopp, and the reader, Elizabeth Bergstone. I look forward to the hearing her read the last in the trilogy, ‘The King’s Mother’.
