Summary
The greatness of The Aenied lies in its ability to envelope the listener in an aura of spiritual longing, an effect that hitherto had never been accomplished in ancient literature. This was one of the reasons why The Aeneid remained so popular throughout the Middle Ages. Early Christians were greatly impressed by the pious, noble quality of the hero Aeneas, and to them Virgil was an accessible bridge between the pagan world and their own. And his work remained the model for epic poetry right through the Renaissance and beyond. Dante, Shakespeare, and Milton owe a debt of gratitude to Virgil and The Aeneid which can never be repaid.
The Aeneid is organized into 12 books. This recording includes a brief synopsis of the story prior to the beginning of each book in order to help the listener understand the action of the verse.

Magical!
This is a great production of a classic work, with simply gripping narration. Thanks Audible.

Roman Odyssey
This is brilliant but a bit old fashioned in language and narration but overall a good listen.

Lived up to expectations
Late in life, as the time has become available, I am attempting to fill in the gaps of great classic literature. I have no difficulty understanding why this is considered a great literary work of art. The audible edition was a fine retelling of the epic poem in English. I regret that I do not have the linguistic skills to read it in the original Latin but I feel assured that this was an excellent translation.

The Founding of Rome
A good beginning to explain the intensity of a very descriptive book.A bit too intense at times.

Awful narrator, Iliad fan-fiction
First of all, let me say that The Aeneid is basically Iliad fan-fiction. It lacks the quality and conviction of The Iliad. Amusing at the start, painful in the middle and a relief to finish.
Any enjoyment was destroyed by Charlton Griffin's hideous narration. He overpronounces as a habit and uses the most ridiculous outdated received pronunciation. The letter 'o' is by default pronounced 'aw', for example. Charlton - people don't speak like this and don't enjoy hearing it. Yes you are a serious and very special actor, but you speak like a nawb.
So many times during the narration I lost track of the story due to reeling from yet another language-mangling from CG. Basically, he spoils this book. It's not a great story in the first place and he kills it. It's worth checking what else CG has narrated...so you can avoid it.
