Editor reviews

At the Indy 500, exchanges between drivers off the track can be as explosive as those on the track, and Tony Carnaghi's lively and animated reading of Jack Arute and Jenna Fryer's book transports the listener to the front row of the action.

A single wrong turn, improper pass, or blown tire can spell defeat in the race, but they can also easily result in peril. Arute and Fryer expertly capture the drama and volatility of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" with this collection of riveting stories, and Carnaghi elevates their prose with a performance that makes it difficult to stop listening after hitting play.

Gentleman, start your engines."

Although a 3 decade fan of Formula 1, before reading this book I knew absolutely nothing about the Indianapolis 500 - and I confess I still know very little, but the selection of tales told were interesting to hear - like the obsession of the Andretti family with the race despite their misfortunes, and the admittance, on equal standing, of a female driver in 1976 plus the near win by another woman, Patrick, in 2005. All of the stories were short and an easy listen although the narrator, Tony Carnaghi, could have been better, running stories into each other with no gap between and a less than clear, comfortable reading.

But interesting, yes, and it has piqued my imagination

Maybe research how to pronounce names

Some interesting snippets of stories from someone who was part of Indy for a long time, but utterly ruined by a comprehensive butchering of the pronunciation of driver names, although my 'favourite' was the narrator's ability to pronounce "Formula Vauxhall" so incorrectly (despite a pause beforehand that screamed 'I have no idea how to pronounce that word, I haven't read the book beforehand or researched this subject, but I'll have a go. What's the worst that could happen?') that it wasn't even recognisable.

Ok if you like star wars because.....

the performance/audio is terrible. it sound like Darth Vader is stood behind the narrator breathing in and out. I had to turn it off soon after starting.
