About this listen

A new civil war has begun: with the emperor Pertinax's murder Marcus and his protector Scaurus have escaped Rome, seeking sanctuary for their familia in the East.

But they are soon pressed back into service by Septimius Severus, the ruthless commander who has seized the imperial capital and who holds the military balance of power over his two rivals.

Niger, the would-be emperor in the East is on the march with six legions, and Scaurus's legion is ordered to Thrace as a sacrificial advance guard, tasked with delaying them. Whatever the cost....

Not long enough!!!!

Spoiler Alert!!!

Enjoyed the last outing but feel it washed over the demise of two of my favourite characters. They should have gone out in blaze of glory but were awarded inconsequential deaths. My only complaint!!

Another great addition to the series.

A gripping story and as always great narration. Saul does a great job and provides continuity to the series. Roll-on the next one!

Enjoy the Familiar

The storylines are brilliant. The characters are well created with a full background to each character.
You find yourself forming a bond with the main characters. I do hope that we are treated to further books in the series.

Excellent

A brilliant story as ever, wonderfully performed and a great continuation of the series.

I was, however, not emotionally prepared for some of the events!

A Really enjoyable addition to the Empire Series

Another book in the Empire series, set in the late 2nd century AD. I am a fan of Anthony Riches and have followed Marcus Aquila and friends all over the Roman Empire. The cast of characters that the author has built up has changed little over time and so it was sad to see 2 well liked characters meet their ends. The book is well crafted as ever and sends you searching your history books to find out more of many of the real people that are woven into the story..

Not the best

Nice to have the characters back, but I felt this was the worst book in the series.
