About this listen

This business novel is a story about Bob Bingham. He’s overwhelmed by running his small business. He works all hours – fixing production problems, designing special products, selling, keeping customers happy, and trying to manage his staff whom he considers mostly idiots.

As his company has grown, the bottom line has stagnated. He’s under pressure from a once-patient investor who now wants returns. A big customer has stopped paying bills. Stock control is poor, causing last-minute buying at high prices. Bob’s marriage is at risk. He’s gaining weight because of a lack of exercise.

He sees no way out and carefully plans to hang himself in his office late at night. But his total fatigue causes him to fall asleep before the final act.Aside from Lena, his operations manager, he feels that his staff are incompetent idiots who “just don’t understand”.

Totally overwhelmed, his attempted suicide fails. A half-hearted, unprepared attempt at a staff meeting is disastrous; Bob has an acute anxiety attack and is hospitalized for several days.

On his return, Lena comes to him with a list of issues, and Bob is frustrated that she hasn’t handled these herself. But she reminds him that she had tried in the past and Bob had become grouchy about it.With help from Moe Strickett, a straight-talking investor who also becomes his mentor, Bob begins to step back. He learns to delegate, install systems, document procedures, set up core values, implement KPI’s and train and involve staff. He learns that, far from being idiots, his staff have hidden talents and novel ideas.

Part way through Bob’s journey Moe had given him a challenge that in a year’s time Bob would be able to take Emily on a two-week vacation… Bob meets the challenge and on his return looks forward to a new business venture.

I both finished and enjoyed this one!

I have bought dozens of business books over the years, both in hard copy and audio book form. I have only finished a tiny percentage of them.
Stand back and grow is fundamentally different - the narrative encourages engagement and the characters create empathy. This means that you want to engage with the business development lessons in the story because you are interested in the journey.
The business development principles presented within this journey are clear, useful and build knowledge progressively - there are elements that i have already started to integrate into my business.
It is well written and the audiobook performance is very good indeed.
My thanks to all involved - the most valuable business audiobook that I have ever bought.

True story

So many people make the same mistakes when running a small business. I so grateful that the book was recommended to me because it is a real scary word out there.

Thourally enjoyable and deeply thought provoking

Over the past five years, I've delved into more than 700 books on Audible, predominantly focusing on business and personal development. Among this extensive library, this particular book stands out as one of the finest. Its content proved both enjoyable and profoundly thought-provoking. The insights gleaned are invaluable, offering a wealth of actionable strategies to integrate into both my business practices and personal life, starting immediately.

Good ideas told through an interesting story

Over the years I have read a number of business fables by authors like Eliyahu Goldratt and Patrick Lencioni. I thought that Stand Back to Grow was very much of the same calibre in its ability to convey meaning through an entertaining story. I'd say that a couple of the ideas were kind of obvious, like creating documentation of a difficult process (I mean - of course!), but I understood the point that it's still one crucial part of a self-propelling business. There's definitely some value to be had whether you own a business or not, so that means that the book did its job well. I was recommended this by a business coach; it was a good choice.
