Summary

Elisabeth Luard, one of the food world's most entertaining and evocative writers, has travelled extensively throughout her life, meeting fascinating people, observing different cultures and uncovering extraordinary ingredients in unusual places.

In this enchanting food memoir, she shares tales and dishes gathered from her global ramblings. With refreshing honesty and warmth, she recounts anecdotes of the many places she has visited: scouring for snails in Crete, sampling exotic spices in Ethiopia and tasting pampered oysters in Tasmania. She describes encounters with a cellarer in chief and a mushroom king and explains why stress is good news for fruit and vegetables and how to spot a truffle lurking under an oak tree.

Divided into four landscapes - rivers, islands, deserts and forests - Elisabeth's stories are coupled with more than 50 authentic recipes, each one a reflection of its unique place of origin, including Boston bean-pot, Hawaiian poke, Cretan bouboutie, mung-bean roti, roasted buttered coffee beans, Anzac biscuits and Sardinian lemon macaroons.

Critic reviews

"Sacrilegious to say it but Elizabeth Luard even beats Elizabeth David. Exquisite writing and wonderful food, and funny too." (Prue Leith)
"Elisabeth Luard proves that no matter where you are, there is food to be gathered, or hunted, or found. Squirrel Pie is a beautifully written tribute to food that has all but vanished from our everyday lives." (Alice Waters)

A Perfect food travel book

Would you listen to Squirrel Pie (and Other Stories) again? Why?

Yes. I love talking, listening, watching and reading about food and food travel. Sharing food and recipes around the globe is clearly important to her and all those she meets. I enjoyed listening to Elisabeth Luard's eating experiences around the globe and will definitely listen to it again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

For me it was the food that was the star. I wanted to try so many different dishes after I listened to this book.

Have you listened to any of Sian Thomas’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have never listened to her before but I felt she narrated the book perfectly.

Any additional comments?

When I searched audible for "food" I got 765 hits. Surprisingly, most of them were the self help type of "you're fat and not good enough let me guilt you into following my diet commands" and not about the pleasure of food or food travel. this was a welcome exception. I would like to hear much more food travel and much less of the other sort.

Terrible.

Narration jumps all over the place. Poorly written and edited. Good performance by the narrator.

disappointing if you are expecting food stories

I would like to have read more about cultures, food, and travel but this was more of a autobiography. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and if you are interested in how the upper classes live and think then this is the book for you but personally I would have liked more about food and other cultures.
