Summary

A powerful story of love and sacrifice that The Boston Globe calls an "extraordinary achievement by an emerging playwright."

Sonia, a Cuban exiled during Castro's rise to power, is forced to relive her tumultuous childhood when her only son enlists in the military following 9/11. Using humor and sensitivity, Sonia Flew paints a lyrical portrait of two families in two countries over a 40-year span.

Editor reviews

L.A. Theatre Works is known for producing stage plays as spectacular audio theater, and this contribution is no exception. In a dazzling two hours, the story covers the anguish of a mother whose only son enlists in the military following 9/11, the mother's own encounter with patriotism and revolution when she fled pre-Castro Cuba, and her inevitable but heartrending reconciliation with the costs of war. Sound effects and music are used with masterful economy - guitars welcome us to Cuba, and bombs shock us in Baghdad. But during dramatic scenes the audio lets the performances of the cast speak for themselves. With themes of war, patriotism, family, and freedom, the audio is a compelling cross-cultural story.
