About this listen

1878: When his family loses their home, to Jack Roberts, who has grown up hearing stories of the Crimean war and the magnificent charge of the Heavy Brigade, the choice between working in a dangerous factory or enlisting in the army and putting on the famed red uniform is an easy one. But when fighting for Queen and Country takes him far from home to defending a small mission station from overwhelming numbers, it is anything but easy and bravery and stoicism take on new meaning.

I Come From SA

Simply brilliant. I have read GH Books and follow his writings. I come from this area and the story of what happens comes a live. Cries of men are heard at night in both places. It has a different atmosphere. Great book as always and Mr Yorks performance is fantastic. Don’t change him as with all his performances brings characters to life. On with the second in the series. Please tell me there are more on the way.

great story

i enjoyed the book, but being a keen student of the zulu war, the narrator choice of every character in a Welsh accent smacks of no research, as most of the characters were english in real life.

Good story

I enjoyed this glimpse into Victorian England of a young man signing up to join the army and ending up fighting in the Zulu wars in Africa. The book is fast moving and the battle scenes frightening. Expertly narrated by Marston York, who brings the whole book alive.

Soldier of the Queen

What a great listen. Loved the historical aspect and also the differences between this book and the movie which I have seen at least 5 times. Having visited the South African settings this book really brought home his it was really like. At least , I hope it was. 10 out of 10.

Best Story of the Zulu War - Gripping Novel

Although, the novel started off slowly with the story of a boy in a working class family in England feasting on the stories of the Crimean War from an old Veteran; it begins to pick up quickly when Jack at 17 and lying about his age joins the army. Through good timing and luck; he associates with a strong group of friends. They get shipped to to South Africa and Jack comes into his own. He is appreciated by the NCO's and Officers who give him unique opportunities to grow as a talented soldier. When it is time to face the Zulu's, our hero really stands out.
This is obviously the start of a new Griff Hosker series and I can hardly wait for the next part of Jack's life as he moves up in the British Army. Great Read!
