About this listen

They slime, they ooze, they kill....

One female slug can lay one and half million eggs a year, a fact which holds terrifying consequences for the people of Merton. As the town basks in the summer heat, a new breed of slug is growing and multiplying. In the waist-high grass, in the dank, dark cellars, they are acquiring new tastes, new cravings. For blood. For flesh. Human flesh....

Dated but fun

I first read this as a paperback way back in the mid 1980's (showing my age) and enjoyed it then as I was a big horror fan at the time. Seeing this released as an audiobook I couldn't resist as it meant I could listen while working and driving the work van.
The story itself is quite dated but still entertaining. The narration is excellent and adds to the story, the suspense and the overall enjoyment of this 40+ year old classic.

Blast from the Past

I requested this audio book unconditionally and I’m so pleased I did. I remembered reading a book called Slugs way back when I was a lot younger, but wasn’t sure if this was the same one. It is and it brought back many memories. I think it was one of the first horror books I bought and it’s still as good now. Perhaps even better because now it’s on audio and the narration is spot on. Simon reads at just the right pace, clearly and with correct pronunciation. He’s one of those talented narrators who manages to bring the story to life, so much so that you think you’ve actually watched it. I’ve added him to my list of narrators to look out for.

Awesome.

A good story, well read, would recommend if you enjoy good horror and/or Shaun Hutson.

Old school gory. Language and tone, of it's time.

Proper old school gory. shortish. sex, slugs, gory descriptions of slugs eating people. very outdated language, but then again cancelling something which is outdated is a slippery slope. if you're not easily offended, then give it a go.

gripping narration

Not my usual genre, but this was a gripping listen. the characters brought to life and my attention held by the easy to listen to narration. Quite gross in places but a fun listen. Give this a go.

Good but some seemingly bad logic

The story was good, along the lines of James Herbert's Rats, and maybe influenced by it. There were just some parts that didn't make sense to me (or my sense isn't working). There is a house which seems both old and new, the same house seems to be owned by the the character Ron Bell and is also a local council house. Another part seems to require breathing apparatus in a sewer where oxygen is desparatly running out even though the character is in a chamber, near the surface directly below a manhole cover which has just been open. There are also other examples that jaulted me out of the narrative. The performer was also good, but unfortunately repeatedly kept using the wrong established voices for the characters. I still enjoyed it and would have rated it higher if not for the flaws.

Fantastic story from the Godfather of Gore

It’s been a while since I read the Slugs paperback, and I’d forgotten how gripping the story was. Simon Aitchison does a fantastic job in bringing the story to life with his inimitable performance.

Extremely entertaining with fantastic narration

This was very silly but highly entertaining! I don’t think I’ll be able to ever see a slug again without shuddering. What really made this book was the narration. Simon does a fantastic job, bringing the story to life with different voices and sound effects, and it is very well paced. Really enjoyed!

Put me off gardening for a while!

This is a brilliantly written story with plenty of stomach turning gore, especially where the worms are coming out of his eyes! Yuck! Quite funny in places but edge of the seat listening from start to finish. Definitely not for bedtime so leave plenty of time to finish it as you will want to get to the end and see what happens.. Highly recommended. Simon Aitchison's narration was second to none bringing the characters and whole story to life, well worth it's 5 star rating.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the narrator and leave this honest review.

Gory novel with immersive narration

This was a gripping and gory novel, and works brilliantly as an audio version. Simon Aitchison’s narration adds real intensity and makes it eerily immersive.
