Summary
On 14 June 2017, a 24-storey block of flats went up in flames.
The fire climbed up cladding as flammable as solid petrol. Fire doors failed to self-close. No alarm rang out to warn sleeping residents. As smoke seeped into their homes, all were told to ‘stay put'. Many did–and they died.
It was a disaster decades in the making.
Peter Apps exposes how a steady stream of deregulation, corporate greed and institutional indifference caused this tragedy. It is the story of a grieving community forsaken by our government, a community still waiting for change.
“However painful the story of Grenfell is, it is one we must hear. Apps' powerful testament tells us how injustice was manifested and how lessons still fail to be learned.”–David Lammy MP
“A staggering achievement, both a testament to the victims, the bereaved and the community of Grenfell and a painstaking, forensic investigation into the causes of the crime itself.”–David Peace, author of the Red Riding Quartet
“Compelling, rigorous, utterly forensic and so very needed. This book has to be the moment that things change.”–Lucy Easthope, author of When the Dust Settles

Everyone should read this.
An extremely well written account of the event which balanced what happened on the night with how it was permitted to take place through regulatory failure. This was a sobering and impactful book which will stay with me.

A shocking but important read
Very detailed and thought provoking. Details that were not reported in mainstream media. The system needs to change.

So Much Truth
So much greed that was taken by the people who are meant to protect us. An excellent book and the names of the 72 lives that were taken by the same greed. I

A must read for every H&S Professional
This is a very powerful read. For those familiar with Perrow’s Normal Accident theory, this is a classic example of where there was so many red flags, near misses and actual incidents that have ample warning of what was going to happen.
It is also a damning indictment of our successive governing parties who played hot potato with the safety of our buildings. Of how cutbacks and greed have informed the choices of those with the intelligence and power to do better.
It’s also a human tragedy. It’s heartbreaking, This book will make you angry and sad in equal measures and well it should.

Emotional rollercoaster of facts
An incredible account of how Grenfell was not only able to happen but destined to, as the husband who’s partner has to use a wheelchair to get around, every person in charge of the health and safety of any blocks of flats, or any social or private rented properties should have to listen to this, and learn the human costs of what their money savings can cause.

It will make you angry
If you hadn’t already guessed the Tory government’s callous disregard for human life is displayed in detail here, although not only to blame, their ideological beliefs were a big reason why Grenfell happened.

Justice must be served!
I thought I knew about Grenfell but I clearly did not. What struck me the most was the absolutely disgusting behaviour of the government and its mates, the shambolic performance of RBKC post tragedy and the inability for anyone to admit this was an avoidable event. LFB are not exonerated either - not one person could open their eyes and make a life saving decision to end stay put advice on the night . I’m actually furious and so disappointed that this has happened in my lifetime. Unless people are prosecuted and held accountable this tragic event will be forgotten about.

Easily Informative
The book gave a fascinating insight into what happened behind the scenes to allow Grenfell to happen.
Despite covering difficult and what could easily be dull or overworded topics it is delivered in such a way that makes it easy to understand and compels you to keep listening
