Summary

A RITA Award finalist.

Broken dreams and second chances.

Honed by danger and haunted by the past, Lord Michael Kenyon finds it easy to risk his life for his country’s sake. But in the shadow of Waterloo, he faces a far more dangerous threat - the loss of his heart to the beautiful battlefield nurse who saves his life yet can never be his.

Called a saint for her virtue and selfless courage, only Catherine Melbourne knows the tragic flaw at the core of her spirit. In Michael Kenyon, she sees the strength and kindness she craves, yet for honor’s sake, she must conceal her love and send him away. Even when freed from her empty marriage, she conceals the truth because of the bleak knowledge she can never again be any man’s wife.

Then fate offers Catherine a fortune, a title, a heritage for her daughter - if Michael will impersonate her husband on a visit to a wild Cornish island. Reluctantly, he agrees to the masquerade. But what begins as a simple journey leads them into a shattering vortex of danger and betrayal - and a fiercely passionate love that can no longer be denied.

Critic reviews

“An extraordinary reading experience. Darkly erotic and sizzling with sensuality, this love story dazzles the senses and steals your heart away. Romance just doesn’t get any better than this.” (Romantic Times)

I'd rate this 4.5 stars

Exciting story with larger than life characters spoilt by a naff ending incorporating rainbows and kittens. Siobhan Waring did a good job.

Superb. One of her best.

I am rarely moved to review my audio books and only do so when a 5 star plus rating is appropriate! MJP writes a captivating blend of adventure and romance and this book is one of my favorites in the Fallen Angels series. The hero and heroine first meet at Waterloo where Catherine saves Michael's life with a blood transfusion. Later in peace time chance brings them together again and Catherine persuades Michael to be her 'temporary husband' and accompany her to visit a dying relative on a remote channel island where it is possible that she might inherit. Intrigue and treachery intervene before the HEA is finally achieved. The book is beautifully written as always with this author. The narration is also outstanding. Highly recommended

Loved it!

This book has everything one would expect of a Regency romance. Initially it seems a lot like a military Regency romance. Just when the audience gets comfortable with that concept, the plot thickens, the suspense increases and the whole story gains momentum. I had a hard time putting the audiobook on pause, especially in the second half of the book.

Michael and Katherine encounter each other in war torn Europe. He is an officer and she another officer's wife spending her time following the drums and acting as a nurse.Their attraction is almost instantaneous but equally impossible to act on. They settle on a respectable friendship.

Their paths cross again a year after Waterloo when Katherine needs Michael's assistance to potentially claim her inheritance. A lot has changed but more than that a darkness looms over them that threatens to swallow them whole.

Siobhan Waring is a perfect match to narrate Mary Jo Putney's story. She brings the story to life, giving each character voices that match their personality and circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and intend to read the whole series.
