Summary

Cape Trafalgar, October 1805

Heading home on a merchant ship from India, Ensign Richard Sharpe finds himself on a far more dangerous journey than he could have anticipated, for war brews at sea. The formidable French navy have destroyed the British blockade and face an outnumbered but formidable foe: Admiral Nelson.

Sharpe’s meeting aboard the Calliope with the beautiful Lady Grace Hale turns quickly to obsession, but he finds unexpected enemies and deep treachery amongst his fellow passengers. And as they approach Cape Trafalgar and the enemy fleet comes into view, ready to fight in one of the most glorious but deadly clashes of the war is Sharpe . . .

Sharpe as good on sea as on land!

It is wonderful seeing Sharpe accumulate leadership skills and maturity as the series progresses. This was a refreshing change from the Indian campaign, a good way to move onto Sharpe’s next chapter - like a little sorbet between courses! As a 60+ yr old woman I have surprised myself how much I am loving these books. Huge credit of course to the superb narrator. The characters are alive in his voice.

Thrilling.

Starts as you'd think fairly calmly and slowly builds and builds and just can't stop listening. Brilliant story and excellently narrated.

Classic Sharpe, poor naval pronunciation

Another great Sharpe story.
A classic Sharpe, unusual for being set at sea. Nonetheless very good and Bernard Cornwell research is also almost spot on.
The performance is also great as usual by Rupert Farley, excellent accents, especially his Sharpe, it’s Sean Bean to perfection. Others are great (apart from his Welsh..); love that all Scots sounds like Sean Connery!
A slight shame that made it miss 5 stars is his poor pronunciation of naval names and terms. The names of the ships involved at Trafalgar was appalling. Greek names were pronounced as if French, French as if English and commonly Anglicised words in their original Romance language. And he repeatedly pronounced sail and spar terms in long form, which they never are, much as Worcester Or Leicester are not fully sounded out.
Otherwise great.

Sharpe does Hornblower!

Cornwells usual fare, lots of action and historical detail.
The only minor criticism is the occasional mispronounced word... usually ship or personal names... I found it annoying!

'An action rich story'

This book is very well structured and the audible acted. This is one of my favourites of the Sharpe series mixing history with fiction (Faction as I call it).
