Summary

"It is my feeling that debilitating shame and guilt are at the root of all dysfunctions in families," says Jane Middelton-Moz.

A few common characteristics of adults shamed in childhood:

  • You may suffer extreme shyness, embarrassment and feelings of being inferior to others.
  • You don't believe you make mistakes, you believe you are a mistake.
  • You feel controlled from the outside and from within.
  • You feel that normal spontaneous expression is blocked.
  • You may suffer from debilitating guilt; you apologize constantly.
  • You have little sense of emotional boundaries; you feel constantly violated by others; you frequently build false boundaries.

If you see yourself in any of these characteristics, you can learn how shame keeps you from being the person you were born to be and how to change that. Shame & Guilt describes how debilitating shame is created and fostered in childhood and how it manifests itself in adulthood and in intimate relationships. Through the use of myths and fairytales to portray different shaming environments, Dr. Middelton-Moz allows you to reach the shamed child within you and to add clarity to what could be difficult concepts.

Story:good diagnosis with very poor solution hints

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not

If you’ve listened to books by Jane Middleton-Moz before, how does this one compare?

I've listened to "After tears" and this book is like 30-35% value of the first one to me. The other book treats the ACOA issue in a much more organized and clear way (in my view). This book "Shame and guilt" evidently shows the high importance of shame and guilt in our lives and yet I have a sense as if this book treats the issue similarly to "a doctor making incisions to a patient on an operation table and then walking away leaving the patient with an open stomach". Good diagnosis, poor solution hints, or unclear hints. Lecture of this book leaves me with a sense of strong frustration that a problem is pointed out and no solution hints given.

What three words best describe Cat Gould’s performance?

Very good narrator.

Did Shame & Guilt inspire you to do anything?

Very frustrated as far as finding ways to solve shame and guilt problems.

Insightful and enlightening

Very nicely narrared in a heart-felt way, bringing the author closer to the reader with honest self-disclosure and many examples. As a professional this was valuable learning and teaching material and has not only impacted on my personal growth and understanding of my own story but also my work with clients. A very important topic that encompasses many of our issues.
