About this listen
Detective Nikki Galena's friend and neighbor meets a tragic end, but there's more to his death than meets the eye. And someone terrible from DS Joseph Easter's past is back.
A man is found executed on a piece of wasteland in Greenborough town. The cold-blooded murder triggers terrible memories for DS Joseph Easter. Just when things seemed to be going well for DS Easter, he realizes that the nightmare is coming back, threatening his career, his sanity, and maybe his life. In a breath-taking conclusion, even Nikki begins to doubt DS Easter as he faces a race against time to save someone very close to him.

Well crafted, exciting story
As I say, this is a well put together story, which remained exciting to the end. Rather iffy narrator: I’m not qualified to pronounce on whether her Fenland accent is authentic, though it sounded ok. One or two other specific accents - Geordie, for example - not good, and some bizarre mispronunciations of some words: ‘Gallipoli’ coming out as ‘Galley Poley’, ‘wanly’ rhyming with ‘mainly’ a bit irritating when they crop up and some dialogue a bit wooden, though that may partly be the text. But I’ll be downloading the next one.

Disappointing narrator performance
I really enjoyed another series by Joy Ellis with Richard Armitage as narrator. This narrator in this series has some pretty poor accents and incorrect pronunciations of several words which was grating.
The story was, as ever, enthralling!

Enjoyable story!
Decent story, but I had guessed the the outcome way before the end!
Awful narration and Henrietta sounded to upper class to be reading this book.

Great story - performance lacking
Another great book from Mistress of the Fens, Joy Ellis. The selection of narrator was however poor and mispronunciation of many words a distraction. Selection of regional accents utterly perverse.

poor narration spoiled a good book
wooden narration, accents dreadful, so sad that a good book has such dreadful performance.

Regional accents
What accent is the reader using? it's sounds like a hybrid comedy northern voice with misplaced inflection. A bit off putting!

Good Listen
Great listen. Love the series. Slightly ruined by the posh southern narrator’s rendition of a northern ( Lincolnshire) accent. Also her mispronunciation of other obvious words.
