Summary

Britain is in shambles, as it recovers from the cataclysm of WWI. Although the war has ended, it takes effort to preserve the peace against hidden enemies striving to undermine or replace the government. There is a desperate need for recruits to fight this invisible war.

Sophie Burgoyne can trace her lineage back to the ancient French kings and dukes of twelve centuries ago. A long pedigree doesn't help her when she only has a few pounds in the bank. Sophie knows she must take action, or she and her father, the vicar of sleepy Havering-under-Lyme, will face the horrors of genteel impoverishment.

With an entree into the upper echelons of British society through her wealthy relations and knowledge of the world of domestic servants, Sophie crafts a plan for the future. She goes to London to start a business—a rare event and a difficult task for a young woman in 1920. Sophie must face many unexpected challenges and dangers as she steps into a world of murder, mystery, and subterfuge.

The rates for domestic servants are competitive, and the service is second to none. So, to solve a servant problem or investigate a sudden death, there is no better choice than . . . Burgoyne's (Secret) Agency.

Better than expected

Women in the 1920s solving crimes and sorting out international situations whilst having a grand old time. I love that No titled ladies are needed to get into country houses just a just a couple of middle class and one working class women using their intelligence and demanding equal pay while they’re at it. So much fun that the cover and blurb really didn’t lead me to expect.

Immensely entertaining

This novel came as a welcome relief from gritty murder mysteries, my main source of pleasure. I thoroughly enjoyed the strong and resourceful female characters and look forward to the next instalment. This is such a departure from the usual detective novels and I hope Esther Wane is retained as narrator.

Easy listening

Very easy to listen to. Able to do other things at the same time. Nicely narrated also.

Needs a good editor

That title goes for both the book and the performance. There's parts in the book that are pointless and unnecessary and could be completely cut out as they're just weird and very self-indulgent.

And the performance is poorly edited so that separate scenes sometimes run together when I'm sure in the printed work it's obvious there's a gap.
