About this listen

A miller found under his wheel.

It's 1194, and Sir Faucon de Ramis, the shire's newly appointed keeper of the pleas, must do his duty and make an official declaration of the cause of a miller's death. Saddled with a clerk who names Faucon his "penance", the shire's first crowner must thread the tangled relationships between the sheriff, the village of Priors Holston, and the priory that once ruled it.

As a simple task takes a turn to the political, what seems obvious isn't, and what appears safe turns out to be more dangerous than he could imagine.

love this reader

Anything read by Gildart Jackson is just brilliant. The story is interesting and gripping, applying an understanding of the likely legal backdrop of that time in a very contemporary manner. A good yarn and bit differemt.

Took a while to grasp

After a shaky start I found this story to be quite engaging as the characters slowly developed. I have lined up the rest as I have a good feeling about this unusual genre. Great narration

A pleasant surprise

I give lots of books on the plus list a try, not always with much joy. This however is good, not over long, interesting plot and period of history. The narrator is better when in character rather than just narrating but improves as you get used to him.

Happily surprised

I listen to a lot of books and I was pleasantly engaged with this story. It was well read and the narrative wasn’t contrived but flowed
It’s still a who done it but an enjoyable and superior tale of its kind

Nice surprise!

I found this on plus. Tightly written with good characters and pacey dialog the narration is excellent and it flows along nicely. Am on to the second in the series which is also on plus but I would have used a credit for - which is as good a review as I can give it!
