Summary

A collection of humorous autobiographical essays by the Academy Award-nominated actress and star of Up in the Air and Pitch Perfect.

"I'm excited to publish my first book, and because I get uncomfortable when people have high expectations, I'd like to use this opportunity to showcase my ineptitude and pettiness and the frequency with which I embarrass myself. And while many of my female inspirations who have become authors are incredibly well educated and accomplished comedy writers, I'm very, very funny on Twitter, according to BuzzFeed and my mom, so I feel like this is a great idea. Quick question: Are run-on sentences still frowned upon? Wait, is ending a sentence with a preposition still frowned upon? I mean, upon frowned? Dammit!" (Anna Kendrick)

Anna Kendrick's autobiographical collection of essays amusingly recounts memorable moments throughout her life, from her middle-class upbringing in New England to the blockbuster movies that have made her one of Hollywood's most popular actresses today. Expanding upon the witty and ironic dispatches for which she is known, Anna Kendrick's essays offer her one-of-a-kind commentary on the absurdities she's experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture.

Critic reviews

"Actress Anna Kendrick narrates her wry and witty collection of autobiographical essays about growing up in Portland, Maine.... Her quick pace, sometimes sarcastic tone, and unmistakably familiar voice enhance funny and shrewd reflections on her ordinary girl's life." ( AudioFile)

Don't call her nice!

It's lovely to imagine that someone gets gifted this book without having a clue who Anna is, and as a result goes from zero to fanboy/girl in three chapters. Of course it's far more likely that people see it and think "oh I really liked her in X, I wonder if she's interesting/funny/normal/nice/weird in real life". Spoiler alert - the answer is yes/yes/yes/hell no/yes.

Anna is a natural storyteller and the book is hugely enhanced by the wonderfully animated way she narrates it - this is really the best way to experience the stories.

I imagine the early chapters about her first forays onto the stage will be particularly interesting for any precocious young would-be performers. Have no fear though parents, there aren't really any tales of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll to worry about. If anything you could do a lot worse for a role model (who definitely would never describe herself as a role model).

If you know Anna from films like 'Up in the Air' and 'Pitch Perfect' it's really interesting to be taken from thinking "wow, super famous movie star" behind the scenes into what her reality was actually like at the time as a suddenly slightly-well-known but still broke and frequently overwhelmed young actress.

And it's probably not possible to be self-deprecating and awkward and normal while also mentioning 'George' (Clooney) and 'Ben' (Affleck) - unless you are ACTUALLY self-deprecating and awkward and normal. Which gives us all a bit of hope.

So all in all I really enjoyed this. It's interesting, nicely written in a chatty conversational tone, very funny in lots of places and wonderfully narrated. And the occasional little life lessons she shares are pretty positive and healthy.

I KNOW, I KNOW, if I loved it/her so much why don't I just marry her. Well, I was actually here looking for that option when I got sidetracked into writing this.

I'm a little bit in love with Anna Kendrick (but don't tell her that)

This is by far the best audiobook I have experienced so far. Acerbic wit, endearing charm and an exceptional delivery, I loved every moment and I hope more will follow.
