Summary

Did you know that the Scots never won a battle when they were favorites?

A sense of poetic irony registers when one learns that Scotland has never won a major military battle when the odds were in their favor. In 1513, the largest Scottish army to ever invade England was defeated by a significantly smaller English army at Flodden Field. In only two hours, the Scots lost 10,000 men. History repeated itself in 1542, when a Scottish army of 15,000 men was defeated by only 3,000 English soldiers. Despite their much smaller numbers, the English managed to take 1,200 Scottish men as prisoners. This humiliating defeat eventually contributed to the demise of King James V.

This captivating history audiobook takes you on a remarkable journey from the earliest extensive historical record of Scotland through the long struggle toward nationhood, all the way to postwar Scotland.

Alright information, Poor Delivery

Performance and reading was riddled with mistakes (not properly edited out) and mispronunciations. Very disappointing.

scholarly but seems a little biased

Nice summary of Scotland's history but the author's prejudices leak through. He apparently dislikes Christianity, and certainly must be an atheist. God isn't responsible for human behavior. Too bad he has to call characters from the past names such as "bigot", etc. It's one thing to pen the history of Scotland, and I appreciate the effort this would have taken. But spare us your judgmental opinions. And on a different "note" - there isn't one mention of the contribution of bagpipers to Scottish history, or even a reference to the musical instrument of Scotland.

A great history poorly narrated

Whilst the story being told was very good, the narrator just didn't fit and too many incorrectly pronounced city/town names. This would be a far better experience if narrated by a Scot.

Basic Factual Errors

I was surprised to hear that the New Model Army was led by Thomas Cromwell rather than Oliver Cromwell. THE Thomas Cromwell?! He’d been dead for a hundred years. I know he was a very capable man, but I don’t think even he would be capable of commanding an army from beyond the grave....

Scottish History - Look elsewhere

The content of this history may have some merit, however the narration is abysmal. I persevered for half an hour but found that I was listening to the ridiculous pronunciation rather than the content. Avoid, especially if you are Scottish and cannot bear to listen to your country's cities and names being expressed in a peculiar American accent - with clearly WRONG pronunciation. It drove me mad!

Dreadful commentator!

Dull as dishwater, and an American who is unable to pronounce any of the Scottish place names. I suppose it is ok for the American market, but it’s totally on suitable over here; simply dreadful. (The history is concise and reasonable, but I just can’t bring myself to listen to that man any longer).

Meh

Not especially well read or researched. Useful only as a superficial timeline overview of Scottish history. Scan Wikipedia, its faster

Dreadful Narration

I cannot believe this excellent book was narrated in the way it was. Totally ruined it for me. Why not have a Scot read it? At least then place names would have been pronounced correctly - there is no such place as Skatland as it was being pronounced. Nor is there an Edinburg or Ber - wick . I live in Edinburgh! Very disappointing.
