About this listen

A new family moves in over the road. The new family is acting strange. This new family has some secrets.

From the author of Audible's Thriller of the Year, Silent Child, comes another psychological thriller to keep you guessing until the very end. Performed by Sophie McShera, (Daisy Mason, Downton Abbey), enter the world of a family broken by lies, a woman traumatised by a dark past, and a child caught in the crossfire.

unexpected turn

narrator could've changed her voice a bit more, it was quite difficult to follow who's pov it was. otherwise I've really enjoyed the story and didn't see the plot twist coming

Sadly rather predictable

Didn’t love Silent Child but thought I would give this author another go. Sadly I was disappointed again. A weak storyline and altogether too predictable an ending. On the plus side the narration was much better than that for Silent Child.

Worked it out by chapter 3

I wasn't enamoured at all by this book.... It could've been the terrible monotone narration. I'd give it a miss.

Great story

Very enjoyable read. Good performances and a good storyline that kept me listening. Highly recommended.

Enjoyed but Poor narration

Enjoyed this shorter story but found it really really difficult to know which character was talking as the narrator didn't change her voice at all.
This maybe just my experience as I now find concentration difficult and found I was rewinding much more often than normal.

Ok but not very exciting

An ok listen but really nothing more than that. Easy to follow but only marginally more exciting than watching my neighbours

In Silent Child's Shadow

In an attempt to build on the success of the highly-publicised Silent Child Audible have quickly moved to release one of Sarah Denzil's earlier novels with Saving April. It is an enjoyable enough listen and Sophie McShera does a really decent job of injecting life into it.

If you want more of Sarah Denzil then it is worth a shot. You'll get a tidy domestic drama albeit one populated by rather weak characters and with a key twist that I think most people will have guessed well before the end. However, it is overshadowed in every way by Silent Child which is a significantly bigger and better book.

A superb short story

Really enjoyed, and like her Silent Child novel, the story flow was engaging. This might sound like a criticism but truly isn't meant as such, wish I'd listened before I heard Silent Child, which had more depth. If you enjoyed Silent Child, you'll like this, If you haven't got round to silent Child perhaps hear this first.

decent quick listen

interesting enough story with good writing and great performance. it's a shorter story and it benefits from not being stretched further than it is. characters are believable and although you know something is wrong you can't quite put your finger on everything straight away.
the story has enough freshness to it, that even though Hannah's backstory seems overly familiar as a plot device (questionable, traumatised, drunk witness) you don't feel bored by the overall book.
would definitely read other books by the author. slightly reminds me of works by Mary Higgins Clark - a shorter thriller, somewhat familiar but yet unique enough to make for a great book

Predictable and thin story

I guessed halfway through the book that April was not what she seemed . The ending was weak and at times the narrators voice irritated . Not Sarah Denzils best I have to say
