About this listen

Something old and deadly has awoken.

When two teenagers go missing from the small, rural town of Sallow Bend, the residents come together to search for them. Little do they suspect that finding the wayward girls will be the start of their problems. An old evil is rising, and only one man seems to realize that everyone is in danger and this is not the first time it’s happened. With the carnival in town, people want to have a good time, but for many, this will be the worst time of their lives.

“Alan Baxter is an accomplished storyteller who ably evokes magic and menace.” (Laird Barron, author of Swift to Chase)

“Baxter delivers the horror goods.” (Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts and The Cabin at the End of the World)

“Step into the ring with Alan Baxter, I dare you. He writes with the grace, precision, and swift brutality of a prizefighter.” (Christopher Golden, New York Times best-selling author of Ararat and The Pandora Room)

Great supernatural mystery

So, I saw 'something old and deadly has awoken' and I was hooked right there, and as the story plays out it does not disappoint, there IS something old and deadly lurking in the woods of Sallow Bend, but the story behind the 'something' is predictably terrible and sad, I do wish it had just been a simple demon ... (yes, I just issued a spoiler .. it is NOT a demon) ... The story leading up to the reveal is slow, and detailed, in the way a good story should be told, not rushed like everything seems to be these days (yes, I'm over 40) ... I enjoyed it and I reckon you should try it for yourself if you've been bothered to read my review.

I received my copy free of charge in exchange for my review (which is honest nonetheless).

Perfection in small town horror.

a well crafted small town horror tale sprinkled with some folk horror elements. Baxter has created a town filled with well fleshed believable characters that you feel with and root for!

Joe Hempel does a great job with the narration. He never let's down!

Small-town Horror!

Summer vacation is about to start, and the Carnival is arriving, but they aren't the only thing coming to this town. An ancient evil is awakening.
Sallow Bend is a well-paced story about a haunted city. The eerie atmosphere got me invested in this story from the first chapter.
A good choice if you like traditional horror.

brilliant Halloween read

Sallow Bend is a fantastic horror book. It was a perfect Halloween read!
A small town is learning about the disappearance of 2 teens, just as a carneval is setting up. Tensions run high but then the girls are found.... And that's when things are only just starting to get weirdly complicated.
Great main characters, super eerie throughout, an absolute gem.
I listened to the audiobook, and of course Joe Hempel is superb as always.
