Summary

This book is Chopper's redemption. It is the real story of the man, the criminal and the prisoner, told with black humour and surprising insight. "This book is about my journey through the Australian prison system. You'll have heard a few of these stories before, but not like this. It's a step-by-step history of my twenty three years behind bars; what day to day life was really like in jail, what I did to survive and why I'll never go back. It's not a nice story. I was not a nice prisoner...

Mark "Chopper" Read is over 50 years old and has spent almost half that time in prison. He is a man who knows the Australian prison system better than any other. He knows how the definitive school of hard knocks turns juvenile delinquents into hardened criminals. How it feels to be thrust into a world of violent psychopaths and be changed, irrevocably, into the worst of their number. He also knows how it feels to pull out a man's colostomy bag (like a rope going through a barbed-wire fence). How it feels to lose your ears to a prison-issue razor blade (a gurgling sound like a little brook). How it feels to fight, maim and mutilate to stay alive. And what it means when that way of life no longer makes sense.

Another cracking story from Chopper.

Another classic book from Chopper. Even if some of it is a good yarn, it's a good yarn non the less. He might have been a psychopath, but he had superficial charm by the bucket load. Great stories and a great story teller, he had an amazing life, at least when you don't have to do the time he did. 10/10

Chopper is a Great Story Teller

An excellent book in every way. Mark 'Chopper' Read really was a character. Love him or hate him he writes a great story of his prison life.

Friendly Neighbourhood Nutcase

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Anyone that likes this kind of book will enjoy this collection of tales.

What other book might you compare Road to Nowhere to, and why?

Every other Chopper book.

Which character – as performed by Andy McPhee – was your favourite?

Obviously, its got to be Chopper himself. Anyone that has heard/read anything about Chop Chop before will have a good idea of what to expect. An almost lovable rogue with a warped and twisted idea of morals.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I enjoyed listening to a chapter or two each day. Not sure I would have been able to maintain interest to do the whole thing in one go as it was slightly repetitive but I guess thats how it actually was, with Chopper going from one violent event to another.

Any additional comments?

Overall I enjoyed the narrator but at times he sounded a little bored. I think sometimes he also mistook a comma for a full stop when reading out loud but there were more positives about the performance than negatives. I thought he captured the humour and delivered it in a way that I would expect from watching a few interviews with Chopper and the film about him. There were quite a few laugh out loud moments.

Quite good as long as this is your genre.

Any additional comments?

If gritty prison reality is your thing then this book will be right up your street. However, if you are at all squeemish or of a more gentle disposition then steer clear. The casual way extreme acts of violence are portrayed is quite disturbing. Such descriptions usually dont affect me but i found i had to be in the 'right mood' shall we say to listen to this one. Listener beware !
