Summary
Ian Withers rewrote the book on what it means to be a Private Investigator. He traversed the world recovering abducted children, gathered intelligence for left and right-wing regimes, and was jailed over a British prime minister's bad bet. Across 60 years, he chased down fraudsters, bugged leaders of international coups, and cracked open assassination plots. He tracked the IRA’s Hyde Park bomber with a bluffed phone call, located Jeremy Thorpe’s illicit lover, and put his life on the line to return snatched tug-of-love kids to desperate parents.
Now, for the first time, Britain’s most controversial agent-for-hire lifts the lid on an intense life in the darkest of shadows.
Gripping, illuminating, and unflinching, Private Eye, Secret Spy is the thrilling true story of a steely English gentleman’s rise to the top of his game.
“Ian Withers has walked the walk…a frank, honest, and brave confession.” (Gary Murray, author of Enemies of the State)

Outstanding
I found this book so engaging in both content and narration. I’m so glad I discovered this book. Back in the 70s I was out with may dad in a Sussex town and we passed a man on a residential street and dad said said “He’s a private detective. I now realise that was ian.

Brings back memories
I grew up in the late 70s, early 80s with Phil and Ian as neighbours. since then the family have often reminisced about the lovable rogue we remembered, but equally had convinced ourselves we were exaggerating the stories in our memories. Well, shucks, exaggerating? No, it turns out we were understating. A riveting listen from start to finish, well written and narrated. Thank you for the memories.

Poor
As you move through each story / tale it felt like there was critically important pieces of information missing meaning at every turn i was left with SO MANY HUGE questions, so much so that it just made most of his tales hard to believe , only with the answers and vital pieces of information, would the tale possibly be then more believable....without all that this book is ridiculous, fanciful and at times VERY amateurish ......Spy books, non fiction and fiction are my favourite genres., ive read 40 + of them..this is the worst book ive listened to bya STREET...fck it off !!
