Summary
It's almost Christmas, and Emery Hazard finds himself face to face with his own personal nightmare: going on a double date with his partner - and boyhood crush - John-Henry Somerset. Hazard brings his boyfriend; Somers brings his estranged wife. Things aren't going to end well.
When a strange call interrupts dinner, however, Hazard and his partner become witnesses to a shooting. The victims: Somers' father and the daughter of a high school friend. The crime is inexplicable. There is no apparent motive, no connection between the victims, and no explanation for how the shooter reached his targets.
Determined to get answers, Hazard and Somers move forward with their investigation in spite of mounting pressure to stop. Their search for the truth draws them into a dark web of conspiracy and into an even darker tangle of twisted love and illicit desire. And as the two men come face to face with the passions and madness behind the crime, they must confront their own feelings for each other - and the hard truths that neither man is ready to accept.

Still amazing!
It keeps on being sooo good!
I'm at the 3rd book in less than a week and now on to the 4th, can't "put it down".
I've let a longer review on the first one saying why I like it so much and it still stands for the 3rd book.

Family matters
There's a common observation that families can f**k you up. Gregory Ashe takes this thought and runs with it. He broadens his scope to other close personal relationships as well. Somers and Hazard both have their fair share of tribulations on this front, some of which influence their view of the case they're working. Ashe does this thematic treatment very well. It's multi-layered and never forced. Indeed, sometimes you don't realise all the connections until you've finished the book.
This title could've done with tighter editing. The case is complex, but to my ear, some of the interviews went on too long.

So infuriating but I love it!
Let me preface this by saying I love this series and will continue listening to the books. But jeeez. That whole town is full of the most unpleasant people. The bile they all spill is poison. The protagonists have a borderline toxic relationship that is uncomfortable to listen to at times. My main negatives are that the author won’t ever use one word when he can use twelve, and he does like to repeat himself. A lot. The narrator can be a little monotone and maudlin. But all in all I want to know what happens next!
