Summary

It’s considered a given, once your child hits puberty, that she or he will become uncommunicative, rude, and withdrawn, but there are neurobiological, social, and developmental reasons for these often-frustrating behaviors, and understanding those factors can really help us parent well.

Focusing on adolescents (covering preteens, teenagers, and young adults), Christine Carter - the parent of four teenagers, a parenting coach, and author - guides you through some of the most important factors when it comes to raising kids in the modern world. She tackles common issues, such as discipline, motivation, drug and alcohol use, sex, and social media, as well as less-frequently addressed concerns, including race, consent, uncertainty, and self-care. In these 18 lessons, parents of children as young as nine will find clear answers to their most pressing questions, along with easy and actionable tactics that are not only based on scientific research, but also road-tested on Dr. Carter’s own kids and clients over the past decade.

The good news is that parenting teenagers can be really joyful and rewarding, and this Audible Original will help guide you down a path that will make your own parenting more fun for every age and stage.

Great book - must read before they are teenagers!

I wished I’ve read this book before! Still many great points to take and use, but I would have loved to have this toolkit before the kids were teenagers, especially the chapter about finances. Very recommended!

Some good points, some ill informed.

Good to a point but there are better parenting manuals available. Sad to find the author is encouraging when it comes to children wishing to turn trans or non binary. Instead of wisely encouraging a child to reconsider at such a young age, the author positively encourages egging the child on which is, frankly, dangerous.

Fantastic book

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, an ideal read for anyone working with teens or who has teens to parent.
To be honest, this book should be read by all parents with teenagers as it is incredibly knowledgeable and insightful and gives fantastic advice with examples without pandering or being patronising. It also offers explanations of behaviours and how to work on them for both the teen and parents and looks at a wide range of teens lives.
