Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Some of what they say about witches is true.

She dug her mother's grave in the poison garden so it would stay hidden...

Lux has lost everything when Else finds her, alone in the woods. Her family, her lover, her home—all burned. The world is suspicious of women like her, neither maiden nor mother. But Lux is cunning; she knows how to exploit people's expectations, how to blend into the background. And she knows a lot about poisons.

Else has not found Lux by accident. She needs her help to seek revenge against the man who wronged her, and together they pursue him north. But on their hunt they will uncover dark secrets that entangle them with dangerous adversaries.

From the snowy winter woods to the bright midnight sun; from the horrors of plague to the relief of healing; from lost and powerless to finding your path, Now She Is Witch questions the oppositions that shadow our lives. In rich and immersive prose, Kirsty Logan conjures a world of violence and beauty in which women grasp at power through witchcraft and poisons, through sexuality and childbearing, through performance and pretence, and most of all through throwing other women to the wolves. This is a witch story unlike any other.

Just not for me

Tried a few times to get into it and never made it past the first quarter. Confusing, slowish story with lots of side stuff going on. Made me quite frustrated. To be fair to it though, it's not one of my usual genres.

Mesmerising

I adored this book. The story itself is rich, with such evocative and sumptuous language, giving length and breadth and depth to its message. I wept at this frank and tender tale, in what felt like a retelling of many an experience from times gone by, the whisper of their effect still lingering on in current times.

I struggled

despite this being one of my favourite types of stories, I really struggled with this one. the chapters which were luxe and else's stories were very difficult to listen to and follow. I think it partly down to the racing narration. I understand why it's like this but I found it very difficult to follow. the basic storyline is ok.

Stunning

It’s rare I think an author should narrate their own books but this was so very beautifully written and read.

Mixed Feelings

I do think excellent narration can elevate a story and although the author did quite well here, an experienced actor would have turned it into a great listen. There were lots of this that blurred into one, maybe as the author didn’t really attempt to do different voices, but there were many times I had to go back and re-listen to find out who was talking.

A strange mix

Beautiful descriptions from the start and a nice change that it’s read by the author themselves so you hear it read as it’s intended to be heard but it’s a bit of a strange mix of a story that you never quite know if Lux is a loony or if Else is actually real or if she is real and she’s the loony or what the hell is happening, it’s so full of absolutely stunning descriptions and it’s honestly some of the most beautiful descriptions of things I’ve ever heard but it does become a bit much after a while and has a stark contrast with f bombs and c bombs that are probably an apt way of describing things for the time this is meant to be set in but are so stark next to the beautiful descriptions of things and you never quite know what’s being truly got at or what the whole point of it all is, why she went there in the first place and why she was put in the bath by the lady etc it’s all a bit of a strange journey to not much conclusion really but honestly some of those descriptions are utterly stunning!

Spellbinding and necessary

I normally listen to audiobooks when I do tasks that don’t need much thought and this book was hard to continue working while listening to. Lux is an immersive and deeply rich protagonist that continues to challenge the world around her and what being a witch really means. The tangents to the narration could get a bit tricky to follow while I multitasked but it was so deeply relatable also. Combining the traditional witch views held by society with Lux’s monologue was expertly written and the whole book left me guessing.

Now She is a Real Witch

I loved this book. A fairytale about witches in a land like our land many years ago, yet not. A girl who is a witch but doesn't know it. A woman who rescues her, helps her and also leads her into danger. This is gritty witchcraft. Not 'good' or 'bad' witches, not white and black magic, but women using all the magic they can in order to survive. And using witchery for the most heady, righteous revenge. There is also a thread in this story about the comfortable domestic world in contrast to the wild. For once here is an author whose narration is utterly perfect. There are so many books with Witch in the title, yet so few of them challenge us with what that might really mean. As much of the world remains dangerous and oppressive of women, and as much of the West now challenges feminism and the hard won rights of women - we need to find our power wherever we can. And we need books that empower us.

I thought this was great!

I liked the fact that the author narrated this!
It was stories within stories and I truly liked it even though worried with regards to some reviews!
Yes a lot of ‘C’ being used but that was the time. The descriptions were outstanding!
