Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wurde 1749 in Frankfurt a. M. geboren. Er starb 1832 in Weimar. "Novelle" (1828) zählt zu Goethes großen Alterswerken. Er selbst sagte: "Zu zeigen, wie das Unbändige, Unüberwindliche oft besser durch Liebe und Frömmigkeit als durch Gewalt bezwungen werde, war die Aufgabe dieser Novelle."
