Summary

Rory Best is widely regarded as one of Ireland's greatest ever captains. Entrusted by Joe Schmidt to lead the side that looked on the wane following the 2015 World Cup, Best's inspirational leadership skills and abrasive qualities proved to be the foundation stones for the most successful period in Ireland's history.

His first year in charge saw Ireland complete a hat trick of victories against the southern hemisphere 'Big Three', including leading his side to a first ever victory over world champions New Zealand in Chicago, a feat that etched Best's place in Irish sporting folklore and ended the All Blacks' record-winning streak of 18 Test victories.

Ireland's annus mirabilis under Best's captaincy would come in 2018 however, when he led the side to only their third Grand Slam title, culminating with a famous victory over England at Twickenham, and a record-breaking run of 12 successive Test victories.

When he steps down as Ireland captain at the age of 37 following the World Cup in Japan, his fourth tournament, history will no doubt also judge Best to be one of their greatest forwards.

A hugely popular figure across the game, Best will finish his career as Ireland's most capped forward, behind only Brian O'Driscoll and Ronan O'Gara in the all-time records, and also made over 200 appearances for his province Ulster.

A great read, candid and honest by an Irish and Ulster legend

I’m an Ireland and Munster (& all Irish provinces) fan. Rory has put in the graft & dedication to be up there with other Irish rugby legends. I’ve read or listened to many rugby books, this was one of the best. Rory led Ireland through the most prolific period of Irish rugby history, a true gentleman & ambassador. His legacy will live on.

Good book

I always enjoy rugby autobiographies. In the past some Irish rugby legends have written incredibly boring autobiography that was impossible to finish without falling asleep. This book doesn’t have that problem. It’s an honest account of one of Ulster’s greatest players. The man’s a legend. 5 stars. I really enjoyed listening to it. Good luck in the future Rory!

Great story start to finish

A great inside to the thoughts and career of Ireland’s greatest rugby captain. The highs and lows, an emotional roller coaster account of one of rugby’s true gentlemen and ambassadors for the sport.

Exciting, fast paced and overall a great read

It was great to hear the other side of the story of Bests career, to actually hear the events from the inside of the team regarding a excellent career within rugby. I have enjoyed watching Rory play and hope to see him with the agri industry with Northern Ireland. Well done on a fantastic book
