About this listen
Accustomed to both murder and dalliance, Australia's favourite detective, the inimitable Miss Fisher, returns in a case that will test her tact and judgement to the full.
When the redoubtable Miss Phryne Fisher receives threatening letters at her home, she enlists the unflappable apprentice Tinker to investigate. But as the harassment of Phryne threatens to spin out of control, her lover, Lin Chung is also targeted.
Meanwhile, Dot begins to fear that her fiance, newly promoted Sergeant Hugh Collins, has gone cold on setting a date for their wedding. Phryne's clever daughters, Ruth and Jane, begin their own investigation into suspiciously dwindling funds when they are sent to help at the Blind Institute.
None of this is quite enough to prevent Phryne from accepting an invitation to a magnificent party at the house of the mysterious Hong. When the party is interrupted by shocking tragedy, Phryne gathers all of her unerring brilliance to track down the miscreants. With some unlikely assistance, Phryne is in a race against time to save a pair of young lovers from disgrace and death.

Awkward narration
As always Phryne Fisher comes to the rescue. This time we have opium smugglers and stealing in a school for the blind. Mix in Jane and Ruth's society debut, star crossed lovers and Hugh Williams going missing and you have all the ingredients for another great listen. But, it was all spoilt by bad narration.
I can't help wondering if the narrator had never read the book before recording it. Her delivery is very wooden and stilted, awkward to listen to at times almost unpleasant.
It says a lot for the strength of the story that I listened to the end.

Murder in Williamstown
Another terrific murder mystery with Miss Fisher discovering and helping the Police, the Chinese community and well as her children helping with a ride letter writer, and finding who is siphoning money out of a school for the blind. Read with care and feeling be Wendy Bos.

Different, quite good, but preferred the others,
I probably listened to this too soon after re listening to the rest of the series, meaning I compared it too closely to the ones read by Stephanie,
Therefore little mistakes ( Jane cut her hair after being nearly drowned in a previous book, not tied to a tree!)
and the household relationships were just different! When compared to the other books,
Suggest that you read/listen to this long enough later for the differences to blur a bit,

Disappointing outing for Phryne
i know Stephanie Daniel was a really hard act to follow, but the narration was terrible; almost AI in the slow pace and mispronunciations. The story also seemed disjointed, characterisations changed and relationships almost unrecognisable. Author not on form here, and I love all the other Phryne books and re-listen to them endlessly.

Wooden narration
The story was interesting, but the narration was wooden and stilted. Such a shame, distracted from the narrative.

Disappointing
The story was okay but glaring errors when remembering past books. Narrative isn’t at all pleasing. Very stilted and bad pronunciation. .

Sadly Disappointed
As the 2 previous reviewers said, this book is not up to the usual standard of Ms Greenwood.
I even wondered whether someone else was the author
If you know the Miss Fisher series well, you will notice that things do not make sense. I’m not even sure where this book should sit in the series.
As one of the other reviewers stated, Jane’s hair was not cut as a result of being tied to a tree.
The relationship between Dot and Hugh is not how it is normally.
If you have watched the series based on the book, you will, I am sure noticed glaring differences. Nothing like the books at all. Part of me wondered whether this book was written for tv.
As for the narrator- I am sorry, but it is much to be desired. I am sure she is great at other books, but not this one.
I was so happy to see a new Miss Fisher book and within moments was so very disappointed.

I'm not sure what to say...
I've been a big fan of these books for years, but this one felt more like a piece of bad fan fiction than a Phryne novel. It's full of inaccurate comments about the characters and all of their personalities seem to have changed. The plot was very bitty, and not very intriguing. I was really disappointed by the narration too, very robotic. I wont be listening to this one again.
