About this listen
How can an average climber do the hardest route in the world? Dave MacLeod wasn’t even the best among his fellow rock climbers in Glasgow, until a sequence of key decisions and influences catalysed his progression from an unremarkable intermediate to one of the best all-round climbers in the world. Dave shows that much of his advantage came from easily trainable skills or behavioural traits that could be replicated by any climber.
Moving the Needle is a story of the ups and downs of a struggle to answer a deep curiosity and its side effect of making the first ascent of Rhapsody at Dumbarton Rock, then the hardest trad climb in the world and the first to earn the grade of E11. Through an autobiographical exploration of his apprenticeship as a climber, the book is intended to function as a guide to transform your own climbing. Foreword by Dave Cuthbertson, and edited by Deziree Wilson.

A MUST - The apprenticeship of one of the UK's most important climbers
Dave's story of finding joy and purpose through climbing is one all climbers can relate to. This audiobook brought everything together and refined his key messages: Curiousity about movement, applying basic principles to training and imagination in arranging a fulfilling climbing life.
Dave's story is enriched by explaining the factors that pushed him away from his school environment and mainstream sport. Misadventures, epics and accidents are evocatively and entertainingly written. I can imagine relistening to this over and over.

Great, engaging listen
This is such a great read, I rarely listen to a book all in one go (or leave reviews) but could've easily listened to another 200 pages of this! Dave's narration is engaging and funny, and he just comes across as a thoughtful, genuine guy, with some useful, nuanced advice to impart. I've followed Dave's climbing and writing for years, and it's informative and touching to hear about his early years, inspiring to learn how he methodically approached developing his capacity and skills, and it's always heartening to hear climbers acknowledging the contribution of their steady trusted belay partners. I hope that Dave does write a book on nutrition for climbers next, that'd be incredibly useful. My climbing dropped off over the past couple of years and this has inspired me to get back onto the rock again, perhaps with a few extra useful insights I didn't have before! Thanks Dave, looking forward to the next chapter of your writing :)

Great story instantly relatable
Dave’s description of his early quest to improve as an athlete is full of very relatable bites, with social hardship, mental illness, motivation and maybe even obsession mostly set in the beautiful mountains and (perhaps dependent on the beholder in some cases) crags of Scotland. I found myself back there in my younger days. A very enjoyable read/listen

Great voice, great read.
Dave Macleod has such a soothing voice. This book is both interesting through its story and instructional through its message, Macleod articulates this period in his life very well.

Excellent
A deep dive into the mind of a living legend in the sport, that has me re-examining my own climbing habits and ways of thinking.

Great to get a deeper insight into Dave's journey to world class performance. Second only to his other book 9 out of 10 climbers. Well read and good recording quality.

Gripping story about Dave's climbing journey
couldn't put this book down from start to finish. Dave is a great writer and narrates this perfectly. He touches on issues of mental health which is a very important aspect not often spoken about, especially for men, and sports. would thoroughly recommend.

Illuminating
Dave's accent and excellent reading skills made the entire listen feel like he wasn't even reading off a page. His description of his coming up in climbing has given me so much to chew on in my own climbing after suffering with a huge knock in confidence following a injury. Totally addicting to listen to and as someone who has got into climbing later his his 20s has changed my perspective on climbing entirely.

Really enjoyed listening to Dave’s story
I came to rock climbing pretty late on and sometimes look back with regret that I should have started out sooner. Listening to Dave’s story has helped me to think how I can develop my own climbing ability. I enjoy both his communication style and little quips along with the accent with makes it any easy listen for me. Definitely recommend!
