Summary

"The flak started about four or five minutes before the target and immediately it was apparent that it was intense and extremely accurate. Oboe entailed the pilot flying dead straight and level for ten minutes on the attack run. Suddenly a tremendous flash lit up the sky about 50 yards ahead of our nose and exactly at our altitude. Within a tenth of a second, we were through the cloud of dirty yellowish-brown smoke and into the blackness beyond. I shall never forget the spontaneous reaction of both my pilot and myself. We turned our heads slowly and looked long and deep into one another's eyes-no word was spoken-no words were needed."

The Mosquito was probably World War II's most versatile combat aircraft. This book contains hundreds of firsthand accounts from many of the two-man crews who flew in them; pilots and navigators. It portrays the dramatic experiences of flying in its many roles as pathfinder, night fighter, reconnaissance aircraft, precision bombing, and low-level ground attack aircraft. It describes many of the RAF's most audacious raids on prime but difficult targets where carpet bombing by heavy bombers was likely to be ineffective and cause unnecessary casualties to civilians. It is a remarkable record of the aircraft and the men that flew them.

Fascinating

The job done by the brave crews was astounding, an incredible piece of aviation engineering which contributed enormously to the RAFs efforts during WW2

Great detail

Some superb details for the fan. Aircraft type and serial offer much to the historical and modeller.
Wasn’t expecting much but was blown away.

eye opener

I did not realise the huge part Mosquitoes played during the second World War and how good they really were. A fantastic listen.

Once you settle in it's a really good book

It did take me a while to get the rhythm and some of the acronyms but after that it is a really well done book.

very informative

a very informative piece which highlights a part of ww2 history I was unaware of. It comments on the continued bombing of the UK cities by the Germans post the 1940s blitz campaign and their interception by the wooden wonder. It also mentions about the interception of German bombers destine for the Normandy landing beaches, weeks after the landing. A lot of interesting information, previously unknown. The material would make a good TV documentary.

The plane that saved Britain.

Another excellent book about the iconic Mosquito from Martin Bowman. An informaive and detailed book on the many varied missions from the original multi role combat aircraft.
The narration is mostly good but sometimes comes across more as lecture.
All in all, well worth a listen.

Highly informative book

Great book offering detailed information regarding the plane and crews that flew. Whilst not a storybook, it describes in detail the planes history and details the crews own insight into its performance. Highlighting in detail its varied operational history and impact during the operational life.

A good book but maybe not a good audiobook.

A typical example of the prolific Martin Bowman's works in that it's a compilation of first hand accounts (some of which may have been published before} woven together with a chronological history written by Bowman.
While the first had accounts are fantastic, Bowman's passage don't really lend themselves to the audiobook format. These commonly become a rather repetitive ist of dates and events.
Nothing wrong with this in book form and I have many of Bowman's well researched books but I tend to see them more as research works rather than a, cover to cover, good read. The books also have the advantage of having the first hand accounts in italics so they are easy to pick out. Not something you can do with an audiobook.

Is it a book or a list? Great detail, but no narrative.

If you like lots and lots of detail, then this might be for you. It is certainly amazingly full of particulars. Not a name is mentioned without full rank and awards and no plane is just a Mosquito or a Dornier; it’s model, armaments, bomb load …….. is meticulously set down. But it’s is really just a long list of raids, crashes and losses with little narrative to hold it together. For me, made it through chapter two and a bit into 3. And decided it wasn’t for me. Reader’s voice is good. Pronunciation of German words perhaps a touch too jolly English, but not the worst. I’ve encountered.

Not The Best.

It's easy to research story's already written (my view) and it's easy to compile them into a book.

I expected much more detailof the aircraft and it's different roles, such as the use of Upkeep Bombs..... But no.... It was really a load of story's from log books and historical reference than anything else.

A very difficult listen after a few chapters.. the narrator held it together though.

The ending?..... It was like hitting a brick wall.
